Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Where would you look for a job outside banking?

I’ve been in banking for 15 years, and have changed three banks. I want to leave WF and the industry. I’ve been trying to think outside the box, and have been sending out resumes to smaller companies, some insurances, and even applying for government jobs. I need a change and definitely not to work for a large corporation. If you have some ideas or positive experiences with other industries where our skills are applicable, please share.

I would apply for a state or county job. Example… I am applying for California State Jobs and even county jobs. In California the state hires a lot of previous Wells Fargo employees.

I was let go in 1Q because I was too old. I took this as an opportunity to get out of finance, as it was a job to make money to support and raise my family. I no longer need that 6 figure salary where all my went to pay bills and pretending to be rich, when I was born a poor boy from Hicksville. Now, I am starting as a rookie police officer (at age 61) in 2025. Think big people. Forget about that golden carrot you see every Monday morning. Tomorrow is not promised, remember that small child from way back when, and be the person or have the job you always wanted.. not the one you were forced to take to please mom and dad or pay bills.

Not OP, but I am in a field highly sought by foreign workers.
Same degree as most of them, but I am much older.

It is strange they can find a job, but I can only land interviews.

@OP, you didn't mention what you do now/current career field/current skills. You want a cake job go Public Sector and be happy being a nothing. I don't mean that in a condescending way. Get a nothing, bottom rung position in local government or school system and just exist. Basically no personal responsibility, you can be terrible and still get your mandated raises and bonuses (if offered). Typically have reasonable to good benefits and retirement pensions. School systems usually have heavy discounts if you have a need to put depends through school.

Then if one day you decided to have some go-getter-ness you just have to wait for someone to become unalived and then get their spot.

They only trade off is pay is typically lower end.

I did it the other way, retired from a government job and went into banking as my 2nd career. True, you cap out in government after X number of years and there are no bonuses. But at the time of my retirement I was earning $150k a year. Plus, I get a monthly pension. Hard to get a fed job though.

Insurance processing (health, life, asset) , Supply chain (logistics/warehouse processing, trading, small business finance. Key is to understand what you like to do, what your strengths/weaknesses are. Upskill yourself by making a list of what you like to do. Take that list and discover what the latest trends are (which today is how AI is applied). Since you are coming from WF you will be about 2-8 years behind depending on how much tech is applied. You got a lot of catching up to do. You can hide it like @vhk or face it. It all begins with a honest assessment.

Good fortune,

I am thinking about becoming a surveyor, there is no H1b and no outsourcing.
Do you think that might work for us?

I'd avoid gov. jobs b/c they tend to pay less than private sector (YMMV). But there are some gov. gigs or gov. contractor gigs that would be great. I know an IT guy that left a few years ago and ended up working in IT but also with some pretty technical space related work as a gov. contractor.

non-banking-- pretty much anybody that's hiring that's not financial services if you're in IT. Aerospace -- e.g. boeing -- is probably a no-go given how bad they've been doing. Auto you likely want to be in the Detroit area (or maybe Austin, GM closed it's innovation centers outside of Detroit).

IT - you could go to pretty much any company.
Non-IT - may be limited by your area of expertise.
However, you could do a quick 6 week certificate in some IT technology and then apply anywhere

I would literally work in any other area aside from corrections.

With how bad the job market presently is, I'd take any exit ramp from this dumpster fire.

Have you considered oil massage therapist?
BAC employees seem to be stressed and in need of oil massages
