Bonus with job change

Has anyone had any experience with receiving your bonus when you accepted a job in another department? I have an opportunity to accept a much better job in a different department however the job would not begin until early January. My current job does pay a bonus so I’m wondering if I would still receive my bonus once I transfer. I’m getting to have this conversation with my manager but unfortunately he is totally clueless and I feel the conversation will go nowhere.

And sometimes people leave because appreciation is not shown via $$$

If the role doesn't start til mid Jan, just wait & give 2 weeks notice, 2 weeks before the role starts. Anything could happen between now & then. Funding could evaporate, your current boss turns on you, etc. Wait as long as you can before saying anything. That way your bonus gets into the system, hopefully.

I left for an internal role in Sep. and asked the new team if they had the funding to match my bonus IF it did not move over with me, which it didn’t. They had the funding, so all good. Just do your due diligence and should be fine.

Bonus is most likely in the system. Your ‘raise’ most likely will be curtailed as ‘you’re getting a raise by moving roles’ That's what happened to me. It was a swipe by the former manager for leaving. She also added a disingenuous line at the end of my review that sounded vaguely circumspect, that the Executive who wrote my review (while my manager was on Maternity leave ) said he never wrote, to ding me. Check everything in the system, and if there are issues, escalate and report it. People don’t leave bad jobs, but they leave bad managers. We all know how middle managers take things personally too once you leave: they think they own you. Show them that they do not.

In no world would I penalize your prorated bonus just because you left under good circumstances.

I moved to a new role Jan this year. (Informed old boss in December)
Old boss lost access to my review and bonus

Old boss entered eval and bonus in system

New boss has access but wasn't on radar to deliver
Old boss couldn't be bothered to research.
Old boss tried to hold year end performance review from memory

Found out my bonus and performance review when system made it visible to me

Bonus was equivalent of prior year

Just be prepared that no one may communicate the info to you

What happens if you go to a lower paying job that doesn’t have a bonus?

You would still receive the bonus from your old team. Some managers gave very poor bonus (60%-80% of your usual amount) to the folks who left the team to make the current team happy. Be prepared for sacrificing your bonus to others in your current team.

A union would give us better bonuses.
