Thread regarding Ford layoffs

So what happens when you are shown the exit door?

I am passionate about my work, I like to take pride in it. My performance, reputation and history has been great. But I believe things can happen to anybody any time without any sensible reason, at least the way things are looking these days. This is just the reality now. Job security my foot!
Frankly speaking, if I knew the engineering career will turn out like this, I would have gone through the excruciating sufferings to become health professional.
My family has several doctors and nurses, and they work like dogs for sure, but they don't have to worry about loosing work. Much better mental health.

Anyway, enough with silly rants.
Just so that it doesn't feel like the sky fell on me suddenly, I want to know what happens when the ax comes for you e.g. your insurance policy, company contributions to your retirement account.
Does the health insurance gets cancelled right away?

OP: I have many doctor friends. They may make a lot of money but they are overworked and look as if they are in poor health. Few know a life outside the hospital.
Qualified nurses are not paid enough and treated poorly by the hospital administration. They do the brunt of the work with little or no credit.

As an Engineer you are much better off.
Regarding your questions: Depending on your service you get health coverage for a few weeks or months. After that you have to buy coverage. Your retirement/401(k) can be moved to your personal IRA. You can get details on the HR Policies pages.

My experience:
Prior to the mass termination in 2019, I removed all my personal belongings from my office, including suppliers business cards that I might need for future reference. I also printed out all the phone numbers for various medical / monetary accounts / etc found on HRs website. Changed the contact info on those sites so info would go to my home address and personal email account. I jotted down coworkers home email addresses, along with their home and work phone numbers. Quietly asked trusted directors for letters of recommendation. Removed all personal items from my work laptop. Printed copies of my last 5 performance reviews, and initiated tag numbers for future vehicle purchases.

On the day I was terminated, I was taken to a conf room where my director and someone from HR were. Was told my services were no longer needed, there was no place for me in the new dept and my last day would be on.... I was told to sign all the papers they pushed in front of me as failure to do so would forfeit my medical and retirement benefits. I then told my company car was to be turned in (with both fobs) by 3pm that day and I had to surrender my badge, keys, and disclose all my passwords.

I was walked backed to my office and told I could only take things that were mine. I was not allowed to touch my phone, nor my computer. I wasn't allowed to take any supplier business cards, nor contact lists with co-workers or suppliers names/phone numbers on them, nor could I say goodbye to my friends. With my one box I was escorted to the door.

I was glad I had gathered all those items beforehand (that I mentioned above). If I would have waited to collect it, I would have not been able to do so on that final day.

Your life insurance stops.
You will be offered COBRA healthcare coverage for a period of time which is basically the same as your current healthcare coverage but you will now have to pay the company portion as well. It’s expensive.
You can get transfer the funds from your 401k to an IRA without a penalty. However, if you are not vested you won’t get the company contribution.
You will get some severance based on how long you were there.
Hope this helps.

Severance benefits depend on the program in place at the time of separation. You will likely get x weeks of severance pay, and y weeks of healthcare, although x and y are not nearly as good as they used to be. If you are vested, you will receive the company contribution of your 401k. Go look up some of this information youself on Ford HR Benefits. Ford used to be a great engineering career company; however, for anyone beginning a career, it will only bring sadness after the shiny stuff wears off.

Defense will be booming. They are not big on WFH, but you can optionally work 4 - 10s and get Friday off. They pay well.

After getting the ax, I went home and applied to the fake job postings on line.
Seriously, most of the online stuff is fake.

Go into medical? Heck, we would probably be better off selling cars at a nice dealership.

Work for an investment company, I have friends doing real well, retired at 45.
