Chevron has found a more efficient way to shed employees

Layoffs and firings have become too costly for Chevron. Instead, the leadership has found a new way to push employees out. They keep piling on work, stress, and criticism until people just can’t take it anymore and leave on their own. And it's working like a charm.

I don't think Chevron does a great job in holding people accountable. Sure we have PMPs and we review if goals were met but everyone seems to be shoe-horned into middle or high accomplishment when in reality there is a higher percentage that should get scored low, get PIP'd, and likely laid off. We need to trim that fat more often and consistently.
Being nice and reducing stress stops us from being more successful.

MW and his downstream gang deliberately knee-capped upstream to cement their position at the top. They thought there would be no price to pay as they used M&A and Permian to keep the headline production numbers stable.

This is becoming more apparent as since 2020 there are markedly fewer doers and way more posturers and players (not to mention diversity placements) in the working ranks. Chevron is operating now on momentum (or more correctly, inertia), not on innovation or risk-taking. Great job, MW.

Good Grief! In my mind, there is always something to do. You can't do everything at once so make a priority list and share it with the boss. Forget about getting promotions or that next job. That is fantasy land and only for the HiPots. The pay and benefits are better than average. Yes, the axe man cometh so get prepared.

With Chevron, it all depends on where you work. Many folks have work schedules with every other (or every Friday ) off. They work 9 hours a day, including over an hour for lunch. Some have intellectual duties that AI systems will do in the future. The stress is pure boredom.

A little bit different take on OP, there are accomplishers (few) and slackers (many) at Chevron, this has been true for a long time but amplified under MW because the accomplishers receive no credit or promotions. The accomplishers get things done, so more is expected of them (i.e., "overwork"). At some point, either these people realize their value, or headhunters take note, and they are wooed away from Chevron. Chevron, partly by design, has little resource (or desire?) to hang on to effective employees, because MW and HR believe they can always be replaced by newly graduated kids.

Things are a mess at Chevron. All the constant upheaval and extra work has become ridiculous. At some point you would think MW would have a light bulb moment and figure out layoffs won't make the company profitable but finding new ways to make money will. He's addicted to layoffs and needs help! We might have to do an intervention for him.

If you can’t make it at Chevron cause the “workload” or the “Stress” then you need to find a job outside the oilfield cause it isn’t softer anywhere else.

Hearing this. OP, makes me even more determined to stick it out. I will k1!! them with kindness and professionalism, to the point that some might wonder whether I am mocking them … but what can they say? This employees is just too doggone nice and hard working? If they want me out, they better bring in a forklift to remove my death grip from my desk! 😜

I don’t allow them to pile on extra work. I refuse to have stress because there is NOTHING to stress about. Criticize all you want. One task at a time, one day at a time. They only do what you allow them to do.
