Location changed, to quit or not to quit

I'm in a hub, but thanks to the "location strategy", my location changed & my daily commute went up from 40 mins to 3 -4 hours depending on traffic. I can no longer drop my kids off at school and daycare and then get to work on time. I feel forced to quit as there's no severence for this situation.

Yeah they’ve gotten to be real sticklers about people assigned to uptown working in ballentyne. Rumor is ballentyne swipes won’t count towards your RTO but I’m waiting on tangible evidence to support that.

Best I could recommend is not staying the whole day and leaving before rush hour traffic gets bad. Quitting seems very reactionary especially in this economy.

To be fair, a 20 minute commute one way is an absolute dream that's pretty unrealistic for most in the Charlotte metro. Even Noda to uptown is often 30 minutes door to door.

The only real options are 1) move closer into a much smaller home to try to get your commute sub ~1 hour one way or 2) get a job in SC. Jobs in Charlotte pay more but it doesn't come without a cost & you have to decide what you're willing to live with.

You should start looking for other work, to keep your options open.

My commute is dependent on traffic- 32 miles, it can take 40min w/ min traffic or at commute times 1 hour. leave your house earlier.

Your manager maybe does not favor you & they are trying to get you to leave by not being accommodating. It su-ks, but that is the way it is.

Ballantyne is full.

Some groups allow you to work 50% of your time in another location. Can you do that and work in Ballantyne or Fort Mill (not sure if its still there)? Another option is to see if you can come in at off times on your uptown days.

I believe your commute is really bad, as Charlotte traffic is getting awful, so would probably look on the side even if it meant taking a slight pay cut. If they cared about employees they would actually let employees chose what location they come into in a market (in some groups they do).

Closing offices, even in hubs, is linked to the location strategy. The point is to reduce the number of commercial real estate properties held, eliminate remote workers and condense employees into fewer locations. Some of the uptown buildings are being closed/sold off as well.

With the closing of the Ft Mill office, my understanding is that some groups were moved to Ballantyne and the rest were moved uptown and communication was sent out that you could NOT work in the Ballantyne office if it was not your designated location, even if there was space on that day...

And yes, in rush hour traffic a commute from Ft Mill to uptown is certainly longer than an hour each way most days...

Closing the Ft Mill office has nothing to do with Location strategy.

Did you not get moved to Ballentyne? All the people in my group who were in Ft Mill are now in Ballentyne?

Find a friend or rent a mailbox with that's outside a 40mi zone. Get a medical exemption, and hopefully one of those accelerates you getting a package. Good luck fellow firm member!! ;))))

Alternatively, you could move closer to your office. I did (with kids in tow).

Yes, I have friends in similar situations. Charlotte traffic is so ridiculous now. Look at jobs at LPL Financial (Ft Mill headquarters) or try to work something out with your manager. Good luck!

OP here, talking about my round-trip daily commute. My office closed (Fort Mill). One way commute used to be 20 mins, now it's 1.5 to 2 hrs. That's 3 to 4 hours daily commute which makes school and daycare drop offs and pickups cut into work hours.

I call BS on this. Even in LA it would be uncommon for a 4 hour commute to be normal.
