Everything from your job security to raises to promotions will be based on nepotism and cronyism before actual job performance. Other factors are also in play (such as who knows the best how to steal credit for things they didn't do themselves, for example) but none of them is your actual work, productivity, or experience. Basically, if you work hard, you will not be in any better position than the biggest slackers in the company. My advice is not to even bother. There's no point.

Being one of those let go... I feel like I was chopped because I actively worked with my GL's to get myself some extra pay bumps over the last few years.
I know for a fact that I was higher up in the pay band for my level. According to their own website I was +60%.
Considering all other factors, this seems like the most likely rationale to being RIF'd.
So in a way this thread isn't wrong. Take your yearly raises, and just coast. Don't go above and beyond and be rewarded for it. L3H always seemed to do more promotions due to seniority than skill anyways... so if you're still there, just bide your time. Do the bare minimum to not get fired. Make sure you're not in the bottom 10% of the pay band, but beyond that... just pay them as much of your life as they are paying you.
Only way to stay protected is joining the good ole boys club in Senior or Upper Management. Then and only then will your job be secure and you are guarantee to make it til retirement!!!
Time to jump ship on this sinking Titanic of a company. Layoffs galore are just another way management is showing you the employees are not a valuable asset as we were once convinced to understand over the years of working here and the many wonderful annual reviews we received which obviously mean nothing.
The brown-noser, the bootlicker, and the nepotistic hire will prevail, no matter how hard you work. The odds are stacked against you, so don't waste your time.
hasn't been my experience. try moving to a different group.
