Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Why This Season Of Layoffs May Destroy The Future Of Work

“In those days, layoffs were used as a last resort: in mergers or extreme financial hardship. Today, they are ubiquitous. In 2023, U.S. layoffs were 98% higher than 2022. And 2024 is not far behind. January felt like open season on employees–especially in the tech sector–with the second highest January layoffs in the past 15 years.

The numbers are staggering, given that the wisdom of layoffs is questionable. Established research has associated downsizing with decreased profitability, especially in research-intensive, high growth and capital-light industries. And mass layoffs damage not only the health and finances of those laid off, but also the long-term vitality of their communities.

But recently there’s something even more sinister afoot. Instead of resisting them, companies with strong balance sheets are actively choosing layoffs–in significant numbers. Meta’s recent earnings report might be the most egregious example: their 25% increase in earnings last year was accompanied by a reduction of 22% (or 19,000) of their employees. And CEO Mark Zuckerberg collected $700 million in dividends. Whether the intention is to amplify earnings, or to earmark funds for AI or other non-human investments, the danger of manipulating headcount as a financial management tool has reverberating and irrevocable consequences.”

Layoffs to improve earnings have been occurring for a long time—made famous by Jack Welch beginning in 1980. The author seems oblivious to business environment of the past 45 years.

“Welch slashed GE's workforce by 112,000 people between 1980 and 1985 as well as outsourcing and offshoring jobs to cheaper markets such as Mexico. ‘What Welch did was fire people when things were going well,’”

"And they are going to desperately need labor force in the next decade".

Has anybody noticed? Your new American workforce has already been introduced to the U. S. workplace and they now number over 9 MILLION! Yes, that's right, the far-left traitors have opened the southern and northern borders to allow MILLIONS of new workers, illegally, into this country. This lines up perfectly with the complicit, corporate approval of all American employers, so their wishes for a larger and cheaper employee base is available to them.

To all the workers near the NYC Times Square location on 42 Street: How do you like your new neighbors now occupying the area just waiting for a new job?

It is the endgame... they need a way to reverse climate change. The only way is to remove the majority of the population. What we have is AI, meat that can be grown in a dish and robotics. Everything the wealthy need to live without other people. They are now cramming everyone into large city hubs, in areas that in 5 years will be uninhabitable. Arizona, Texas and coastal areas to the south. The wealthy have built bunkers in the northern areas. Think about it... our days are numbered... they are not even attempting to fix anything... the roads, the wiring infrastructure and general maintenance is not happening. Everything is falling down. This is not progress, this is greed and survival of the wealthy.

You are so right!! It’s called late stage capitalism, where middle class will be nonexistent we’re getting very close now!

CEOs are paid 2000% more than the people that actually run the business.

They think that removing a bunch of jobs is going to make workers accept lower wages in the future. Scare the slaves so they accept harsher conditions.

The pendulum always swings. It might take a few yrs (starting in earnest in 2026, most likely), but high demand for employees will return.

And people have long memories.
Longer than some of these current companies will be around.

Poor leadership. SO shortsighted.

They caused this chaos (unqualified and greedy). And they are going to desperately need labor force in the next decade.

Read Super Age (link below). Not enough labor, even taking into account technology/AI, etc. Not enough prime age workers in pipeline to fill jobs. Companies will be competing for staff and trying to attract them (limited pool) as well as older demo (incl. 60+). And younger demo will be able to demand anything they want from employers, incl 100% WFH. RTO will die -- finally.
