Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

How many others feel this way?

This layoff is a pivotal moment for me. Before the layoff, I would feel guilty if i didn't go the extra mile in everything I do. If I had extra time, I would proactively reach out to colleagues or my manager to see what else I could do to help out. Even after FOW, I still had a strong work drive. Since 10/12, I just lost that ambition. I saw good hard working people with many years of experience just disappear. Many of these people I looked up to. What's the point of going above and beyond for a company that cares more about their bottom line than the hard working employees. With more layoffs looming, I see no point of burning myself out anymore. I'm just doing enough to get my job done and nothing more.

This was posted by @wdjc+1oHj33ci, but I fully agree with every single word. I simply don't care anymore. Cigna lost so much by treating us the way it did.

I am at the point where I have shifted my spending habits. I am being very conservative with my money due to the uncertainty of these layoffs and also being part of the Medicare team. For example, my Christmas shopping will be smaller/cheaper, my appliance that needs to be replaced will have to wait, and I'm not taking on new debts and increasing savings. It's harder to save as EVERYTHING is more expensive and Cigna's merit increase hasn't kept up with inflation. I am tightening my belt and preparing for the worst.

What did you think of the 3rd Qt performance video that David Cordani pushed out on Iris today? According to him, we performed great 3rd quarter and we had good growth which I interpret to he cut cost and jobs. He still hasn't addressed the layoffs and leaves it his subordinates. #FireCordani

I think that day should be 11/9. Everyone needs a mental health day!

Imagine if one week, 74,000 people just didn’t show up for work. Not advocating for a union, advocating for every one of us who actually makes the wheels turn. Let’s see David transmit an eligibility file or Noelle answer a question about why a claim was adjudicated the way it was… js

Yep. Hard as he-l to motivate myself to even want to do the bare minimum between this and the arbitrary return to office BS. I saved up a bit of money for scenarios like this. Really just want to outright quit and take a couple months off - but that'll probably make my depression exponentially worse. Oof.

At this point if you honestly think you are getting a bonus, especially if you are laid off, you are completely delusional.

IRIS explains circumstances where you get a bonus. Full bonus if you are laid off Jan-March. Partial if you are laid off October-December.

“You get a bonus for 2023. You worked all year and you are legally entitled. That’s why you get it.”

What? Yeah, no. You’re not “legally entitled” to a bonus. It’s a bonus. They don’t have to award it at all. I’d bet the farm only executives will get bonuses at Cigna this time around. If you’re expecting one, prepare for disappointment.

You get a bonus for 2023. You worked all year and you are legally entitled. That’s why you get it.
I worked for another large insurance company in Corporate Accounting meeting with the CFO monthly. You’re delusional if you think a company cares about you. It’s all about making money. At Cigna, they fire employees so that they can pay investors. And every team will fire at least one member.
At the other company I worked for. When it was all over. They had weekly team huddles. People would just sit there and s-b. This went on for months. The CFO told people to get their act together and move on.
Life is hard and full of disappointment. Ask any parent. Get used to it. Every person that loses their job can and should take it personally. But remember, you don’t matter. So stop going the extra mile. Stop missing dinner with your family. Work, life balance is a myth.

I feel the exact same way. I haven’t personally seen anyone disappear; my team has gone on pretending (or for some, maybe not even knowing?) that these layoffs have occurred. I haven’t had the guts to ask any of my teammates or my manager about the layoffs and whether we’re at risk. My anger is silently brewing. I’ve just lost all motivation and drive to work hard. Might as well make use of WFH and coast until March (if I even make it that far).

My manager continues to push, push, push; they create a stressful sense of urgency with all criticism and no praise and I’m working up the courage to ask them about layoffs the next time they pi-s me off.

Cigna lost me with FOW. Absolutely absurd. Less absurd for anyone that was in office prior to the pandemic, and anyone close to Hartford. But for everyone else, outrageous. I started looking the second I got the designation. Finally found something and I’m out the door. On to bigger and better things. Cigna is a sinking ship. Just wait until all those lawsuits start landing related to RICO collusion to jack up insulin prices. This is just the Overture. The real tragic opera hasn’t even started.

Cigna lost my motivation and respect with the FoW announcement. I just don't care anymore, and I used to care way too much.

What makes you think you will even get a bonus?

I get what you are saying but I still want to do my best to get the highest bonus possible.

Hope your name is not on the next round!

This is exactly how I feel. I have lost my focus. Even if I’m not on the list for 11/9 I have lost all trust in this company. This is the 2nd time this year they told us there would be no layoffs and sure enough there were layoffs. Zero integrity.

It's a sad but true fact in most workplaces that we are just widgets to be crossed off the balance sheet if costs are to be cut. We're not humans but office supplies.

For those who work in customer facing or role with decision making powers impacting the customer, think about this when you know the customer has a valid request & that enforcing the money saving technicalities of corporate policy causes suffering and you know how to make it work for the customer within guidelines due to your knowledge.
