Thread regarding VMware layoffs

I'm saddened to see the vitriol on this site

I watched Novell shoot to the moon in the late eighties as it rode the LAN wave only to live through its futile attempts at finding its way in the aughts. So I have a lot of empathy for all of you VMware folks who are watching VMware's own 'circle of life' end poorly after so many glory days.

But please, either quietly move on to greener pastures or come join Broadcom and help us provide quality infrastructure for our customers.

I was at Symantec during the Broadcom acquisition. It was an extremely trying process to live through but after several years on the other side I and my team continue to work with technology and customers that we're invested in and enjoy. I'm not a fan of the 'private equity' game plan that's playing out globally but working for a growing, well-managed corporation has been good for our incomes, equity and a good work/life balance.

I also think you'll find Hock Tan's leadership refreshing as he's one of the most open and candid CEO's I've ever worked for.

I'm looking forward to working with all of you who make the transition.

The actual (TLDR) content rules are in the footer of the page, but here is the summary of what kind of posts site mods usually delete:

  • foul language and insults
  • names, personal info (PII) of employees or mgrs (c-level's ok as they are public figures)
  • threats
  • trolling
  • spamming (or tons of posts with the similar text)
  • impersonating m someone in a misleading or deceptive manner
  • off-topic posts about politics, religion or race/nationality/ethnicity
  • direct advertising
  • illegal and proprietary content

that bullet number two is what gets most people in trouble, you start talking names here and they will nuke that post in no time.

(Not my post, it's a copy-paste from another forum board here, but I think is accurate).

It’s an anon forum not related to VMware with a just few simple rules listed in a footer. Names are not allowed, so don’t name people that aren’t already c-suits or other public figures unless you wanna get your post nuked. Also, when talking about someone focus on their work actions and not on their looks and personal stuff, as personal insults and slander are not allowed either.

"VMW employees raising the bar of expectations to work for an organization that's worthy of our high-performance talen"

Pathetic, you are not going to stay for long.
Previous comment deleted as well, this is the most miserable stuff I've seen in a long time.

I can understand the Broadcomers reacting negatively to the VMware people. They are the maintance men of technology keeping dying products alive. They don't like the new guys coming in and showing them up, so they overreact and act all important.

"A very well articulated and thoughtful post."

I don't agree. I found it to be condescending and presumptuous.

The overall tone of this Symantec leftover merely confirmed me that it would be a mistake to work at AVGO, and I'm now more eager to get my severance and leave.

"All of these other products are footnotes to that. It's all in the 10-K!"

But they are innovation and HT wants them. He has talked up Tanzu, Edge, Security and VCF in public statements. Just look at the four divisions that were announced.

For hardcore profit driven Hock warriors, Broadcom drones seem pretty thin-skinned. It's not rocket science why ppl would be mad immediately after a massive layoff.

Broadcoomers, you keep doing you. Extend the same courtesy and let ppl vent if they want to on a damn layoff forum.

"It can be hard for people to admit that they aren't relevant anymore or that they're not as fantastic as they think they are."

Both can be true: I don't want to work for the shithole that is Broadcom AND VMware has been irrelevant for a decade-plus.

You are not famililar with the VMware product portfolio.

Oh please enlighten me? The vast majority of VMware's revenue comes from vSphere and its related products. That's a product with roots over 20 years old. All of these other products are footnotes to that. It's all in the 10-K!

" But in the tech industry, if you aren't moving forward, you are slowly dying."

You are not famililar with the VMware product portfolio. Broadcom certainly isn't innovating. This deal happened because Hock got cheap financing and MD wanted to cash out. It has nothing to do with the products or the innovation.

A very well articulated and thoughtful post. If VMware had been doing the things that great companies do such as innovating and making its own products obsolete by making evolutionary new products in virtualization and cloud computing, Hock wouldn't have been able to buy this company. Instead, it got fat on vSphere licensing fees and blew money on fruitless acquisitions and other silly endeavors that were never going to pan out. It can be hard for people to admit that they aren't relevant anymore or that they're not as fantastic as they think they are. But in the tech industry, if you aren't moving forward, you are slowly dying. We aren't selling sugar water here.

Welcome to Broadcom, the graveyard of technology. The place where products go to die and the graveyard keepers are delusional.

@OP, thank you for your input. Given you said you've passed through the transitions before, I bet you know that all of us need to pass all 5 stages of grief. Right now we are in "anger" phase and need to vent, so let us do just that - vent.

"But please, either quietly move on to greener pastures" -- why don't shove this "advice" where it belongs? Unbelievable superciliousness and arrogance is oozing through this entire post. Just shut the ^$%^$ up!

How dare you tell us what to do. No, I won't go quietly. Just because you choose to embrace AVGO mediocrity doesn't give you the right to preach your 'Hock dogma' to us.

Instead, we will gladly leave with dignity and resist the call to join Broadcom Software.

Well if that's not some seriously repressive sh-t. Come here for the "refreshing" culture but if you don't just be quiet about it, OK?

LOL...what a complete clown car.

I think broadcom actions are worse. They are the source of the vitriole. Targeting the symptoms never Resoles an issue and is quite communist.

"I'm looking forward to working with all of you who make the transition."

That transition group is shrinking daily since many AVGO offers have been declined.

Where you see vitriol, we see more VMW employees raising the bar of expectations to work for an organization that's worthy of our high-performance talent. I choose not to work with you because I don't find anything about Hock Tan refreshing. He's myopic and shortsighted. There is more to life than a dehumanizing 'profit-centered' AVGO culture.

OP appreciate your wisdom, I agree fully on all the points, and yes always appreciate the candid approach from Hock. One thing we know about him is that he is an absolute no-BS guy.

Interesting experience over the weekend. We chatted with a guy who works at Broadcom. He likes it, but sees the limitations. He’s in engineering. Says his computer is super old, they won’t get him a new one - so he purchased a new keyboard for it himself. They never feel exactly safe and quarterly watch where their business unit ranks against the others. If it’s going the wrong way, there can be trouble. The colleagues get along, the stock goes up. So far so good. It’s all about the RSUs. Said work life balance was bad the first years but more reasonable now.
