Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Time to vote for union

I’m in talk with local union teamsters. They said they would help with the vote to unionize. I encourage all of you to do the same. WF poor management has brought it upon themselves.

The union behind unionizing over 300 Starbucks cafes around the United States has paid nearly $2.5 million to workers involved with unionizing the iconic coffee company, according to a LaborUnionNews.com preliminary analysis of publicly-available information.
While the actual amount is likely much higher, according to financial records (known as LM forms) on file with the U.S. Department of Labor, Workers United—an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU)—paid 41 union consultants, organizers, union “salts,” or union activists $2,422,324 in 2022.

Sounds like the threat of unionization forced them to throw some token raises at the non-union members. Without that threat, they would've been lowballed again. So, yet again the threat of collective action yielding dividends. Nice try though.

Since SBUX was mentioned, let’s see how those efforts are progressing.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/06/business/starbucks-wages-union/index.html
“Non-union employees will be eligible to accrue more vacation time sooner, but when it comes to pay, things are a little trickier. Starbucks said Monday that a 3% annual increase will take into effect on January 1 for all eligible workers at company-operated US stores. Workers who have been at Starbucks for 2-5 years will get a pay bump of at least 4%. And those who have at least five years under their belts will get a lift of at least 5%, Starbucks said.

Union members will get whatever increases were locked in last year, which vary. That means that many workers will get the 3% or 4% hike, and some the 5%, even if they are unionized. But the company will not offer new increases in pay, or vacation accrual benefits, to unionized workers — unless it is forced to concede those based on collective bargaining negotiations”

The only ones that 'must stop' are the executives. THEY are the ones making unionization possible through their lies, harassment, and failures.

A preliminary analysis shows that the campaign to unionize Starbucks is not a mere "grassroots" campaign, but a purposely-orchestrated, well-financed campaign by Workers United.

I agree Senior management is horrendous, this place has become so toxic. I don’t think a union is going to do anything but take your dues! But by all means, unionize away. It’s interesting how the survey results haven’t been released. Guess they need to make themselves look better first. So far this new crop of senior managers is even worse than the last, clueless and out of touch.

When you have a union, there are layoffs. You pay dues, then get laid off. So what is the point of a union? You basically spend money from your paycheck, to get laid off.

My husband was a teamster for many years. All the union does is take their dues from your paycheck with nothing in return. The company you work for will do what they want in the end, and to believe otherwise is incredibly naive.

Why is the union necessary? What is it you want then do do?

Unions do not stop companies from making business decisions like eliminating your jobs, offshoring, or moving out of your markets. In fact, unions give businesses another reason to do all of those things. You may think you have some sort of magical union hold over a company, but you do not.

If Scharf doesn't like it, **** it, I'm in. He's brought this upon himself and at this point I'm in it for spite and severance.

my response.. copiloted with ChatGPT: While I understand the frustration with poor management, it's essential to recognize that unions may not be a foolproof solution to prevent offshoring or layoffs. While they can provide support and negotiation power for workers, global economic factors and business decisions can still influence efficiency and offshoring decisions. It's crucial to weigh the potential benefits of unionizing, such as improved working conditions and fair wages, against the broader economic challenges that may persist. Research and consider all aspects before making a decision.
