Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Is MS Teams logging conversations?

I recall, last year, seeing live dictation/captioning in Teams during a meeting and thinking how creepy it was.

In Settings, there is a 'Captions and transcripts' section and the option is turned on by default to "Automaticaly identify me in meeting captions and transcripts".

Is this data being collected? I can't seem to find this in a viewable area of Teams anymore.

Nothing is private if you are logged into a WF system. Nothing. They aren’t likely monitoring everything all day; but as others have said, if there is a problem with you, they will dig in. Happened even in the old days before teams. I was close to internal investigators and their stories about what folks said and did on company systems was wild. If you have something controversial to say, do it on your private phone.

What makes you think that the company is not tracking and recording your conversations? Of course they are, and every company is doing the same. There is absolutely no privacy in the corporate environment, when are you going to learn?

WF uses theta lake. Conversations are indeed tracked and analyzed. Google theta lake.

Executives likely know not to put anything inappropriate in Teams. They are the ones who with the awareness that content is surveilled. But if they use Teams, they are not exempt from archiving all their activity and making it searchable.

Teams is more likely to be used inappropriately by low to mid-level staff.

Bunch of fear mongering here. While I won't dispute the 'capability' of tapping into your communication data that you transmit via teams, I highly doubt that there's much of any likelihood that you're going to be somehow held accountable for what you type or say across teams unless you do something that brings attention to yourself --- such as being named for harassment or something. I've been here near 20 years and have transmitted millions of communications over Skype/Teams, a good many of which would likely get me fired if for no other reason that simply being critical of management, but I'm still here. They aren't coming after your pings to Joe and Bob about how much an id--t your boss Randy is.

So, I take it that the source of all our scandals and legal troubles, the executives, aren't subjected to these e-discovery searches? If they are, then why the heck do we have a scandal every week?

Short answer - yes

WF will log everything and keep it for as long as they are legally required. Wouldn't surprise me if they had AI scanning things to alert anything suspicious, but otherwise, unless they are either looking to fire you or court ordered they likely aren't looking at it.

Of course it is. There are whole teams that do nothing but read every email/IM, etc. The $200million settlement announcement today was all about employees using unapproved methods that aren’t tracked.

Here's all the Teams content that is saved and searchable. Basically everything including audio.

Wow after clearly telling everyone that everything in Teams is logged, saved, and searchable - still geniuses coming here and saying that it's not. Yes, Wells tech teams are incompetent and struggle with logging. If you had any knowledge of Teams back-end and the e-discovery features, you know it's one of Teams biggest selling points. Dysfunctional businesses like Wells no longer have to figure out how to capture and log all the data...Microsoft does it all brilliantly behind the scenes for them. That's the beautify of Cloud.

All of you saying we can’t do anything right sbould remember that teams is hosted by Microsoft. If tell them what and how long to retain I’m pretty sure they can do it.

Assume everything is captured. Chats are deleted after a short period of time but who knows how long they’re actually kept. Exposure to legal discovery is a thing for sure.

This company can’t even maintain a data lake from disparate sources. Much less log and review call transcript from literally millions over the course of a month. We spend boatloads on retaining customer calls for short periods. Risk in keeping employee calls we don’t have to (Outside of regulated user). But agree, better safe than sorry.

For legal purposes, wf doesn’t want to keep recit doesn’t have to. Too much risk to do so. On tech side, we are so dysfunctional we can’t even log all basic security events effectively due to capacity and complexity. Doubt we retain recording of 100k+ people per day

Use personal devices sensitive discussions. Despite what is being promoted publicly this is the leadership direction. Kind of like the hiring practices where we document a lot non-sense BS and hire whoever we like.

You should have no expectation of privacy on any machine you're using for work, whether it's written or voice communication, creating documents, etc.

Why on earth is anyone talking about anything with anyone on Teams? Personal Cell phones only in my group for communication. And it’s like that with both my manager and their manager.

We use Teams only for mundane team meetings where everyone knows to say nothing. We’ll text if something needs to be said during call.

anyone who thinks everything we do on WF equipment isn't logged and tracked is fooling themselves. always err on the side of them doing something. If you wouldn't discuss it out loud then use a personal device.

Tech person here. Know that everything you type, say, and do in Teams is logged and tracked. Admins can and do run 'e-discovery' searches for things illegal, unethical, and other. Teams is extremely efficient at this as these logs are regularly used for litigation support.
