Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

No rhyme or reason to any of it

Today, I discovered an AT&T employee who lives within the same zip code as me. Our kids went to the same elementary school a few years apart. We have worked for AT&T for respectively 9 and 12 years in different Organizations (NB and GTO). Our commutes to the office would be on the same highway and route. The only difference we can find in our designation is my drive, according to Google Maps, is 48.2 miles, whereas hers is 50.4 miles. I am FTO; she is TW. We are at the same level, and have relatively similar paychecks adjusted for years of service. Both have spotless performance, with meets and exceeds, and each a couple of connections awards in the last decade. Before the pandemic, both of us were TWs and only went to the office for town halls or big events we wanted to participate in. but now im FTO, and she stayed TW... Why the h e l l do I have to drive 45-60 minutes each way 3 days to the office, while someone in the same zip code, only has to go once a month? This whole RTO Is b u l l - s h i t of the highest accord!

Long term older employees are less likely to relocate. Unfortunately this is a protected class. To remove more of these, more younger employees need to be surplussed. Then the young ones need to be replaced.


The plan: all employees to relocate. Old employees decline. No protected class violation, they did not move. F the heartless HR trd who came up with this.

There’s an office across the street from my home in California. Big office, over 1100 people assigned to it. 5 minute walk from my house. They’re going to make me drive 97 miles to go into an office where I work with nobody, so I can sit on the phone and take part in meetings with people in St Lous, Dallas, Seattle, Atlanta and New Jersey. These places are where my teammates are. Collaborate my a-s! It’s all about targeting the people who aren’t responsible for our $14 stock price, to deflect blame from the worst manage team of any major corporation in the country.

That is no longer happening for people outside of the CO/ MTSO business units.

They are not accepting access requests for folks outside of those business units.

You can understand why, as suddenly everyone became very interested in where all of the CO's, MTSO's, POPs and other network locations are. There is no way they could accommodate all of the requests.

As pointed out, your complaints are not job related. A few identified the possible reasons for why TW. You need to identify a good business reason why WFH is a good for the company. I live close to a central office (2.2 miles) while original location was 65 miles. Noise from he office caused me to be just a little late on assignments and kept me employed. Fatigue from the drive also contributed. Once reassigned to the CO; I went from 5 to 3 to 1 to no days at CO. Projects were never late again and nobody ever checked where I'm working. Find a business reason to not drive.

I'm craft, always had to go in no matter what! Restored hospitals when cables were cut during the pandemic and was never given a mask or hand sanitizer. Watched fellow employees take the allowed "time-off" for the pandemic while I went to work every day. After all that cr-p was over I was told to take the "shot" or refused employment.

You guys have no idea of what it means to be employed! If you guys are so indispensable, go get those great opportunities that wait!!

You seem to know a lot about someone you just discovered today. Maybe she has health reason for TW. Or maybe her org has different rules. TW is not automatically granted based on Commute miles. When you start comparing people next to you you see that things aren’t fair. Get used to that or you’ll have a miserable life. Worry about yourself. RTO will blow over sooner or later, just ride it out.

Well, I live in the same neighborhood as another employee. We’re both craft/non management. They worked from home for almost three years during that covid mess while I had to go to the office every day, wearing a mask and having to ‘social distance’ with a hundred other people in the same office. Our work was totally doable from home but our upper management gave not F’s. I feel your frustration. Sh*t happens.

Sorry to tell you, but there is a ton of rhyme and reason to this, the only thing you have in common is your zip code and that you work for AT&T.

The fact that you’re kids went to same elementary school: immaterial.

Similar pay: immaterial

Winners of connection awards: immaterial

Same level: immaterial

The mileage to the office: immaterial

Different business units: material

Each BU are handling the RTO differently. I live 64 miles from the office, and have been TW for over 10 years. So far they will not give me an exception.

Second thing to note, maybe the other employee has a medical exception, which she doesn’t have to share.

Very bad analogies. Your boss and her boss are different. You work in two totally different organizations. You ARE both Management and can be treated differently. Needs of the business.

I never heard of that as a business reason to make accommodations nor, time and title, or distance from work location.

Well there’s a couple of factors, and you spelled them out.

First, you’re in different business units. They’re not all doing the same thing. Second, you’re within 50 miles of the office. They aren’t.

Throw all of that rating and connection award stuff out the window, none of it is applicable.

I get the frustration, but if you continue to try and apply logic you’re just going to continue to be frustrated.

Because there is no rhyme and reason to designations. Each org is looking to reduce headcount. Same thing happened to me…people with same exact job in same org got different designations. It’s a load of cr-p. F em.
