Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Expectations are absurd - walk away?

The constant downsizing has cut into the bones of teams. The expectation to keep up with the volume of work with the same level of quality is completely unreasonable. It’s come to the point where I just need to leave voluntarily to maintain my sanity and health. 14 hour days, not able to take PTO….Perhaps that’s the goal. So many people on the site say the are waiting to be let go. How do you deal with the workload in the meantime?

OP literally said not one thing about COVID or masks. You are obsessed and need help.

You are not doing the customers and stakeholders any favors by working yourself to death to prevent exposing the massive gaps left by staffing cuts. If they don't have enough people on the task, let it fail.

Remember that you did not create and cannot solve this problem. Your leadership has chosen to step up and not push back at your expense.

A success here does not benefit you and you won’t be credited for it. Only your leadership would be. A failure here would also not really reflect on you. If anything, it would enable your leadership to justify more resources. And, seriously, what are they going to do? Dock you one star and and .05% of your pathetic annual increase?

Do what you can and want to in your forty hours. Never say no but ask for prioritization clarity. Look really busy from the outside. And go home after 8 hours. That is all they are compensating you for.

Unless you are getting paid OT, never ever work over 40.

Remember - you can be next on the chopping block. Nobody cares how much extra work you are puttin in. Do your 8 jr and drop the pen. Go home and relax.

OP, similar situation here. I’m in a team that we can’t just step away because it is that important. We’ve taken on more and more mainly due to our boss never pushing back. So what have I done to combat that for my own sanity? I got real quiet and stopped doing it except for when I absolutely have to. I quit being on call 24/7, stopped going in early and staying late, especially since they made us RTO. I don’t talk with anyone at the office because I have no need to, everyone I work with daily is scattered across the US. having to RTO just made my job and life that much harder, we have always been remote even long before covid due to the nature of the work which can go 16-20hour days with no breaks. Anyways. You have to push back and just stop. If I dropped dead tomorrow, they’d have someone else by next week. Keep that in mind.

Work your eight hours and go home. It’ll be there tomorrow.

Work 40 hours then drop everything. Doesn't mater how important it is or who it is impacting. If it's that critical, they can hire more people to support it.

The moment you demonstrate you are willing to go above and beyond to "carry the weight" of those who got laid off, the more you will be taken advantage of. It's a story as old as time.

Learn to say no and you won't get 14 hours of work dumped on you.

Stop allowing yourself to be overwhelmed, do a full days work then go home. The company cuts past hurting, then when they see the workload isn’t getting handled they stop cutting and usually hire back to catch the load.

Being an overachiever is only hurting yourself, I wouldn’t worry about their new expectations, they caused the situation.
