Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Question about CBC

I work in a C.O. maintaining LU switches & working Carrier eqpt.
After hours & on weekends I pre-wire houses for a large builder both commercial & private homes.
Since I don't wire for a living, is this considered a CBC violation?
The day job earns me about $80k & the side jobs earn me about $175k & I figure "why not"?
Comments please.

Managers violate the COBC all the time and suffer no consequences!! COBC is a joke for those that have a privileged status.

It’s a conflict of interest covered under cobc. They’ve fired people who were selling refrigerators at Best Buy because Best Buy also sells competitors cell service. If any one finds out your toast.

The company stance is if you are doing work that someone could be paying at&t to do, then you are violating cbc. Your actual work duties are not a factor.

To clarify, when I say contracts, I am talking about NDAs. You don't want to be in a sticky situation where you sign two different NDAs for the same thing.

I also don't mean to be disrespectful, but pre-wiring homes and businesses isn't exactly a trade secret. Anyone can learn to do it and anyone can get certified for it. He-l, I wired up my own house with ethernet. Hardest part was climbing through a 100 degree attic, moving insulation, and knowing where to drill without damage anything load-bearing.

The day job earns me about $80k

In my state, you wouldn't even qualify for a non-compete agreement.

As long as you're not using company resources, why does it matter what you do with your free time?

Since I don't wire for a living

I don't see how this matters either. You can be a software engineer and do software engineering sidegigs. The company is not entitled to monopolize your skillset unless you are working in a highly specific field and have entered into a contract with them. Think AI programmer developing self-driving software for company A working part-time at company B developing self-driving software. That would likely violate your contract.

No. Do not conduct your personal business on company time or use company materials. You are good but if your values are correct, you should be doing it full time.
