Cautionary Tale - short term cost of cutting costs

“We were spending about $2,000,000 a year with a vendor. They had a great customer service rep we loved….and a production manager that crushed quality and lead times. 💪

All was good. 😀

These two rock star employees eventually needed a raise.

Management refused.

So they left.

As time went by, their replacements proved to be inferior.

Our service started to su-k.
Lead times grew long.
Quality suffered.

Our employees complained.
We vocalized our frustration.

Nothing got better.

And eventually that $2,000,000 turned into $400,000.

$1.6 million LOST.

All because this vendor refused to shell out $40,000 in raises. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Here’s the takeaway:

Focusing on numbers before people comes at a cost.

For this vendor. That cost was exactly $1.6 million.

Guys, it’ll always cost you way more to replace someone than to just pay them what their worth.

Stop nickle and diming.

When you’ve got a great employee, and they want a raise - PAY THEM.

Don’t overthink it.

There is nothing - NOTHING more important than keeping great people.

Stop worrying about right this second and your precious little budget - THINK LONG TERM.

Short sightedness on the NOW will leave you reeling in the end.

Great people are ALWAYS worth it.

Or maybe you’d just rather lose $1.6 million. 😬”

If your huge corporation is dependent on a single or even a few employees to continue operations then you're doing it wrong. Sorry that's how it is.

Excellent description of what Stankey is doing to AT&T. In his quest for a younger (read: cheaper) workforce, Stankey and his hatchetman are firing experienced (read: older and better paid) employees who don’t live in “hubs.” The company is in a downward spiral as it waits to be sold off by Stankey for pennies on the dollar, with declining customer service and plummeting market share.

This. Bring back the pension for people hired after 2015, even if it means less for the people who "just need a few more years" until MR75!

Let’s see… three rock star devs completing a 3 month project bug free, robust, and scalable is somehow more expensive than 15 outsource devs, working for a year on said project. Then fixing bugs for three more months. Then having to rewrite it for 6 more months because it is impossible to add new features.

It's too late for that. Those people took the first train outta here when AT&T offered a nice severance for first round of voluntary layoffs years ago.

Why isn’t leadership looking at how much we’re paying Accenture and take note that it’s being abused both ways.
Accenture
doesn’t always deliver and doesn’t get dinged

Internal groups
Are paid to be middlemen and add no value

Not a good recipe for shareholder value

Choosing to be dependent on outsourcing to IBM and Amdocs was a lesson that went unlearned. Now it will be Accenture. Leaders have lost their moral compass and now only care about their own longevity rather than the long term success of the company. It’s unsustainable and the bill is coming due.
