Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

@1rsd+1oNUjeJa - company line BS. Did you copy and paste that? I've been in those "higher up" conversations about layoffs in my past. Sounds so familiar. "Business as usual". Yes it is. They can't run the business right and are sued. Rather than taking responsibility and investing in systems, training, and safety nets, they just budget for lawsuits. I read in a finance article (can't find it again) that Centene set aside 1.5 billion for lawsuits. It's like the slumlords who just budget for the fines rather than do anything about it systemically. The powers that be know they can just lay people off to make up for it. Pick off the higher earners for the biggest bang. And around and around we go. And Sarah, you are transforming healthcare, and not in a good way. The enemy is pleased with you.

It will be interesting to me to see who they keep on.....the talent, ha! I work in a department where half of the people barely do the basics of their job. You can ask bosses three levels up to try to make an employee do their job and it all goes undone. The hardworking employees that actually do their job and the job of the slack employees will most likely be the ones let go. I've tried for over 4 years to get upper management to get employees to do their job, give them proper training and provide us with the resources we need, all to no avail. I've worked in a professional business environment for many years and I can assure you not one thing I've seen about this company is professional. Basic internal controls don't exist and we were told last year that over 50% of the work we do is "rework". I can discuss ways to reduce that all day long with them but I'm not taken serious. There's always a r mason why someone can't be held responsible to do their job. Even if you aren't laid off, personally I think it would be a blessing in disguise, it would be very wise to get out. Quality is only going to go down. Karma and the Survival of the fittest will prevail and for certain Centene is headed to crash and burn. I'll enjoy watching it's demise.

I was apart of the layoff in August and the meeting was placed on my calendar 1hr prior to being let go. I had no clue . The delivery felt cold to me. 😭I feel horrible for everyone because now you know something is about to happen and you have questions: who? What? When? Where?🙏. Totally not cool to have to work under these circumstances the fear of the unknown. Keep your heads up everyone!!😇

This is correct. There is a large disparity between WellCare and Centene employees. Instead of the teams working together in their strengths, on both sides there is animosity.

Centene needed to diversify their assets in order to grow in the industry, hence the merger. The challenges that have bubbled up are from teams unyielding to work together. There are many differences from WellCare to Centene, the largest is the Lines of Business and workflows.

Being part of large governmental audits for both sides, Medicaid and Medicare, it is clear that Centene lacks safety nets, where, WellCare due to multiple citations learned from there errors and created systems to prevent these gaps.

To be clear, the fines from Centene are in Medicaid not Medicare for 2023. It can be easy to cast blame on a merger and those employees, however, the $230 million payout was on Medicaid rates being inappropriate.

The layoffs have impacted all staff across the board, that actually started in Q1, and have been ongoing. Yes, outsourcing is a large factor.

This is not alarming, all companies do quarterly layoffs to reach budgetary cost that meet the quota of the investors. This has bubbled up, as it was leaked, otherwise, it would be business as usual.

The Townhall in Tampa, FL is a private event. Employees will view by Zoom.
It was an invite only event for select individuals that received an email with a Pass.
No, they did not rent the stadium, they rented a clubhouse.

The layoffs were to remain hush-hush, until October when they began the conversations. This is not the last Layoff, there will be another round in November and December.

I just clocked in and immediately looked through my emails to see if i have any scheduled meetings/ 1 on 1's coming up. The feeling of not knowing what's going on is going to drive me crazy until next week. I wish they would have gone about this a better way.

I understand Centene people do not like WellCare people- but are they aware that WellCare people have been begging for training in how Centene operates? This isn’t WellCares fault. WellCare people have been outcasted and ignored through this whole process. They ask questions only to get ignored, so they are left to fend for themselves and figure it out on their own. Self taught. They want to learn, but training has basically been refused. What little training was given , was not even training. An hour? Threatened daily with right ups, their livelihood threatened everyday and being pushed beyond their means, compared to centene employees and made to feel inferior in a program they know absolutely nothing about. That’s how WellCare employees were introduced to centene.

I've had over half of my team laid off in the first round of layoffs a couple years back. I've watched my manager fall from an awarded Employee, to a shadow of who they once were. Now every mistake is punished. Every misstep a catastrophe. I'm often reminded I'm not regarded as a human. I lost faith in my leadership when my Vice President had the nerve to say "I don't believe in work life balance. I haven't been to one of my kids baseball games in years." How disgusting to brag about that.

I stay because I don't really have the convenience of taking risks with my career, I live single income and paycheck to paycheck. I can barely cover my rent and bills. Working for Centene used to be something I shared with pride. Used to be.

If there are any AZ based employees who end up being affected (or you just wanna get out of this awful company) you can send me an email at janetfreeman16@icloud.com. I literally just quit a few weeks ago and started a job that seems pretty awesome. It isn’t healthcare but the job is similar to what referral specialists do and it is hybrid work. You gotta reside in AZ though. Employee referrals are automatically in consideration. Don’t gotta worry about them never responding to your application.

Took a deep dive on every state the company is in to look at their warn notice. Centene has not submitted a warn notice in any state it operates. Looks like they are doing rounds of layoffs to keep themselves off the warn notices for every state. The warn notice is a notice to the employees 60 days prior to the intended layoffs for employers with 100+ employees. Mass layoff according to the warn notice are 50 employees or more or 1/3 of the workforce reduction Per site. This means state with multiple offices can do 49 and fly under the radar. Check your state:

@1cpy+1oNUjeJa this id--t talks as if a company is a faceless entity that reason and think by itself, entities has manager and they are supposed to lead and make decisions, if those who lead they command huge salary/bonuses at the expense of your hard work and dedication and if they sc--w tomorrow, they should be the ones accountable, not the employees that did everything right, there is huge imbalance in power, that is why people unionize, because alone they got you by the ba--s and never flex a muscle, it is the CEO and the CFO who should be fire or penalized for making bad decision, not the guy in the call center who is doing everything right to feed its family

You can thumb down this wisdom all you want, but unless Centene has broken an agreement with you, you should not be on this board trying to hurt Centene!

Calling for walkouts, telling folks not to do their best...shameful!!!

All Christians on this board do not follow some of the godless evil commentors on this board, remember Matthew 20!

Centene has wronged no one, Centene has paid every one of these commentors as agreed! Layoff or not Centene has broken no vows or agreements with these people!

Matthew 20

1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.

2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.

5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.

6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?

7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.

8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.

9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.

10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.

11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,

12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.

13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?

14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.

15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

I just want to say that in all the time that I worked for Centene, Centene did exactly as it agreed to do with me. I worked for them 40 hours or so, a week and I was paid every two weeks the exact sum with which we agreed...they never missed a paycheck, and the check was never short money...EVER!

The benefits they offered were exactly what was agreed to when I was hired. When I left, I gave them two weeks' notice as is customary, no one from Centene beat me up or called me names when I left! And when I needed references my X-leaders came through!

I am not sure why everyone so upset that Centene is now doing the same thing to you as you can do to Centene?

  1. Is there anyone on this message board who didn't get what Centene agreed to?
  2. Did Centene miss a paycheck or not give a bonus that you were promised?
  3. What did Centene agree to that they reneged on?
  4. What promises did they make that they failed to deliver?

You people are all mixed up...Centene owes you nothing but what you agreed to when you were hired...plain and simple!

Stop crying and go get a better job...be you!

Centene is NOT your mommy!!!

Shocker…Centene and it’s affiliate “local health plans” have been laying people off in phases for MANY years to avoid having to notify regulators. This summer many across the enterprise were notified that their last day would be the first week of October. We’ve also heard rumors of more layoffs are coming in November. Sarah had a town hall earlier this year that was like a talk show, then a praise and worship town hall live with a choir in Mississippi and this Thursday they’ve rented out the NFL stadium in Tampa and based in the preview on CNET, it is going to be a freaking pep rally. I hope they tone it down and are respectful of the news that was leaked regarding layoffs. We absolutely will not get straight forward answers/info at the town hall this week and every time they do layoffs we don’t know who is in the rift until no one is doing their job, sh-t doesn’t get done and they are suddenly “presence unknown” in Teams. Organization charts are not a thing at Centene. Centene closed many offices across the country and we’re working from home - where is all the money going that was being spent on offices?! Sarah, Drew Asher, Ken Fasola, Dave Thomas, Zane Yates and the others on the 8th floor are banking when the rest of the company cannot get merit/equity increases or additional staffing resources for their over worked departments. If we get told to increase our capacity one more time, people are going to jump ship and the “25 million” Americans and the healthcare community that depend on us will be the ones to suffer. States with RFPs out or dropping soon like Virginia, Georgia, Florida and Kansas should really consider the stability of the organization. New Mexico was smart to cancel Centene’s contract. When you don’t have staffing resources, providers don’t get credentialed and enrolled correctly and you can forget paying claims because there a million different systems at Centene and the provider directory is a joke. There are good people at Centene doing excellent things, but don’t ever trust leadership on the 8th floor or the business development team, or RVPs at corporate- they are in it for themselves and their bonuses that are 10X+ the average workers annual salary. Love Sarah’s ideas and energy, but the white men at the top of EVERY dept who are pulling the strings, hiding/inflating their numbers dept numbers - need to go. Performance reviews are starting next month - 70% of the workforce has to be in “meets and expectations” - you can be a rock star and your People Leader’s favorite employee is one of the 20% that might get Exceeds Expectations or the elite 5% they gets Significantly Exceeds and that is only after they go through calibration to reduce the ratings. Enough for now… going to look for a new job like everyone else at Centene.

This cant be possible. These people leaders that got us here will be the same one’s notifying us of a layoff? This can’t be real with the amount of poor leadership posts throughout this website. There are good ones, but to be at a 3% layoff the bad must outweigh the good.

From Forbes today from a Centene spokesperson - “We routinely assess our workforce to ensure we have the talent and expertise necessary to support our members and the evolving needs of our business,” a company spokeswoman said. “Our decision was not made lightly and impacts approximately 2,000 employees, just over 3% of our workforce. Centene will support impacted employees with severance packages and outplacement services, consistent with our standard approach.”

This company is a joke they abuse their employees there’s no moral ethics or mission, they praise the non compliance bull that occurs on a daily basis in medicare sales and those who work honestly get punished. There’s no motivation for the employee or stability, it feels like undocumented person has more rights than someone working at this company. Unfortunately a lot of us have families who can’t afford for us to take the ethical way out so we have to stay here but it’s not fair and it’s terrible.

I assure all of you no information will be given at the Townhall Thursday. It’ll be bullsh** talking in circles and general statements with no real detail. They will let a couple staged people ask questions then shut the Zoom down. I haven’t met leadership in the 13 years I worked for this company that didn’t only care about themselves. You never trust a manager, director, VP, etc. They are trained in the art of manipulation and only care about their numbers. The last 3 years have been absolute misery for my whole team. I was laid off w WellCare and was treated infinitely better during that process than I am on the daily here at Centene. I’m leaving regardless if I’m selected or not.

This is not a good company to work for. Several departments are short staffed as it is, why fire people and put even more work onto already overworked underpaid employees? Most lower level employees are made to do others jobs with little to no training, subjected to monthly audits on those very calls and held to unreasonable standards. Management only cares about meeting metrics. At any cost. I can understand why; now that I’ve seen Ms. London’s outrageous salary. Annual raises are minuscule, bonuses are non existent, morale is low, managers nit pick every move you make, time off is allotted but using it is almost punishable, the amount of su-k time given is a joke, being forced on camera for every meeting is over reach. At this point, the ones who don’t get fired should be considered “the unlucky ones”.
