Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

The reason these layoffs are normally done quietly is exactly because of the impact in morale this is having.

Thanks a lot, whistleblower and Gale. Even though 97% of people are safe, 100% are scared, angry, and upset. Great reporting.

Some people just want to watch the world burn…

1:30 AM where I am, and I can’t sleep (again!) Thinking tomorrow’s Town Hall is not going to give us any more clarity, but hoping for some answers. I also hope everyone here has 2 cool sides on their pillow tonight, and that everyone still has a secure job come this time next week.

It's weird that ur dept said that because ours encouraged us to attend so we would stop asking them questions, and we have SLA to meet too in CA ..they just said to reach out to supervisor to change your lunch hr if during that time..

"My department was told that we can attend tomorrows town hall but we must keep working because we cant let our SLA dip during the meeting. We may be getting news we are losing our jobs but we have to listen and maintain our stats."

I am curious to know if the Warn Notice means that Centene was required to report their intent to execute mass layoffs to EDD. I know that in CA they are required to give employees 60 days notice. If they were required to report it to EDD....well it would appear they did not as I cannot find them listed on the Warn Notice list on EDDs site. Lots of Tesla and Meta on there though.

To the question about management suddenly leaving. Yeah our IT director left suddenly with almost no warning right after the pivots were announced. He left with no goodbyes or anything which was really out of character because he liked all the employees and was real personable.

On top of that, we lost another director and a few managers within that time frame too. Not sure if that has anything to do with the layoffs, but it was weird.

Can someone please explain "Sarah the Poet"? I don't understand where this came from.

He's a creepy troll obsessed with Sarah (and Drew). I think everyone has just gotten used to him and ignores him mostly. Apparently she stated that she liked poetry 20+ years ago in college. Who knows. Pretty irrelevant to the current conversation, but he likes to post a lot about her. My recommendation would be to ignore any post referring to her as Poet.

This is my first time going through layoffs, I know it’s common in these big corps but God does it feel horrible. My manager said she was “proud of the way our team was handling the uncertainty” I felt like it was such a slap to my face. I’m sitting here trying to meet my quota and trying to maintain my “hardworking ethic” meanwhile I have no idea if I will even have that position next week. Hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst is all I can do at this point. Best of luck to you all!

As an employee for Centene, I can say with all honesty that I am PROUD to be a part of their culture over the past 6.5yrs. If I'm part of the 2,000, then so be it. I have learned and grown so much working here and that in itself makes me incredibly marketable. Sarah IS an amazing female leader and she is what Centene needed in a time where you could only wear suits in the office; Mad Men mentality. I will be present and maintain my professional work ethic until my last day, no matter if it's this year or in 10yrs.

This is corporate America! This happens! It doesn't ease the anxiety of unemployment but the name calling and trash talk is childish. Do Centene a favor and just raise your hand and volunteer to part of #Club2000.

I’m really interested to know how much severance pay will be…

FYI some states like mine will disqualify someone from unemployment if they accept severance pay.

Anyone know about the "Emotional Intelligence" trainings assigned by CU almost immediately after that email? Some of my team was assigned it and others were not. Same on another team I've worked closely with. PL said she didn't assign it though it said so on the email.

Wow, no LinkedIn posts from Centene have as many reactions and comments and views like this one. Fu-k, you have the power and deserve good leaders. Send a message to the board and a link of this, they know that tif they don't replace Sarah the poet and Drew, this company will not be able to operate. Centene needs transparency in the leadership, people who care, sympathetic to the employees, not corporate thieves, white collar criminals

Can someone explain why this is allowed?
Copied from another post:

Performance reviews are starting next month - 70% of the workforce has to be in “meets and expectations” - you can be a rock star and your People Leader’s favorite employee is one of the 20% that might get Exceeds Expectations or the elite 5% they gets Significantly Exceeds and that is only after they go through calibration to reduce the ratings.

Since our team is short staffed I have no other choice BUT to be productive! And if they catch you missing work you will get called out in an email on why you couldn't keep up. I am so exhausted with zero motivation to do anything. They expect you to provide quality over quantity but how is that even possible when the workload has doubled?? I have no idea what I will do if I get laid off b/c when I tried to find a new job last year I only got one interview and tons of rejection emails. How is anyone supposed to find anything when you're competing against thousands??? This really su-ks b/c I don't really want to be unemployed. Everything is truly terrible. :(

The list has been made. No amount of pi----g and moaning is going to change that. Neither is boycotting the Town Hall nor trying to "halt" production by taking a sick day.

It is what it is and there is nothing you can do at this point to change that.

If you want to avoid being on future lists, step up your game and make yourself irreplaceable!

This CEO and it's leadership are inherently liars, they will try to pacify people so they can continue to take millions, I would not trust one word from any of them, they can't take what they did back. They all need fire and the board has to act and have someone honest and transparent in charge.

You have to wonder why the people speaking derogatorily towards their coworkers and in favor of the wealth hoarding criminals at the top are still hiding behind “anonymous”. People are struggling. Dying. Being preyed upon and lied to. Read the room.

If you really want to have your comments make an impact, don’t reply to the people who are trying to stir the pot. I assure you: they don’t care. I’m on the side of the people not getting fire. But don’t get goaded by the people trying to agitate you. Try to get info, don’t get nonsense from those negative people.

I seriously hope whoever is reading this will be okay.

Most of us don’t know the C Suite Executives to comment on them with a personal opinion. I think the frustration is our people leaders who don’t listen or comprehend. Layoffs happen. What shouldn’t happen is there being over 20k complaints of people leaders lack of leadership skills. Most that have been here much longer than her. What has HR done about this?

I do agree she was probably unqualified. I understand she has Harvard background but she does remind me of the founder of Thanos. Elizabeth holmes? I don't know how she got where she was at, good pedigree, political backing etc. The problem is no one is providing proof. They are just saying slanderous things. No I am not a chief of staff. I am just observer of the ludicrous.

@1qxu+1oNUjeJa let me guess, you are the chief of staff or someone in hr. First , Sarah is not qualified for that role, she got lucky and got there by a hair, it was between her and that guy from Wellcare that people hate to death, so she benefitted from the political infighting, she doesn't have the experience, neither the understanding of an enterprise this size , before Centene she was sales person, she sold herself as a tech person ,and Michael, who despite whatever people could say , built this company, and positioned her well with the idea she could advance tech in Centene, little he knew, she was just a fraud, she is fed with a ton of information and like great poet sp-t it out in
those earnings call, but always full of contradictions and incohrencies, all she does is talk, but don't execute, she has been unable to lead because she doesn't know what is doing, and yes, there were a dozen people more qualified than her that would made it ten times better job, at the very least more transparent and honest than this snake, she backstabed most of the people that helped her when she she got the job, there have been a lot of sh---y things under her watch, they have disappeared people overnight, they created chaos and continue to do so. There is much more to it. She deserves to be fired yesterday

I have been following this thread for months as I knew what was happening. 10 years at the company in various positions, you can read the writing. Let's settle a couple things.

  1. Opinions about Sarah will differ but she was a breath of fresh air that allowed remote work and didn't require pantyhose in corporate office.
  2. Yes she makes a lot of money. She has a huge job running a global fortune 100 company and being responsible for 75k jobs. Her salary should reflect her responsibility. These ceo salary debates for profit, non profit etc have been going on for decades.
  3. If you hate her so much leave. There are thousands of companies to work for.
  4. Centene has issues as any health insurance Company does, layoffs are everywhere.
  5. No I am not HR or C suite
  6. Yes my department was impacted I am told I was not but will believe that never
  7. Was this handled poorly? Notifying employees that a RIF was coming and not addressing it for a few days su-ks and put everyone edge.
  8. Will there be more? Absolutely
  9. Has centene been a great company to work for? Yes. I will say my one pause for concern was we never laid people off around holidays. Even if you were on a PIP. A firing freeze went into effect before November and wasn't lifted until Jan. Because of that and they want to keep bodies for OE I will be looking. My loyalty has been lost.

I caution everyone speaking out of anxiety or fear. Please look for another job if you believe all these things your saying. Sarah and Drew and all the executives need our support to serve our members.

Not that it matters, but FYI: The same media outlet that published the leak also published a second article. The first was the leak itself and the company didn’t respond. The second article quotes the company as CONFIRMING the details. It’s already happening.

Would love to see a whole lot of people “get Covid” for the next couple weeks. :)

Even if I don’t get laid off at this point not sure if I want to continue working for Centene. The outsourcing they are doing with NTT is a joke. NTT does not provide quality work. Eventually the states will start complaining and Centene will start loosing their contracts. Then there will be no Centene. So sad that the board members don’t see this.

Man we have a bunch of qualified CEOs in these comments who clearly know how to run a corporation. Look, I’m not saying everything that’s going on is right, it’s not. Do we waste money? Absolutely. Is it wrong to hide layoffs? Depends, I think everyone would complain if they knew or if they didn’t. Do the leaders make a ton of money while relying on the little people? Yes. Was it a bad move to take the bonus away? Yes. Let me remind you a majority of employees ASKED for a salary increase due to inflation. You got it! You cost the rest of us our bonus, which is never guaranteed in the first place. Layoffs are happening at UHC, BC, CVS everywhere. Lots play into it. Dems, Republicans, every side.
You wanting to boycott a town hall won’t do anything . Don’t want to work now? Okay, there is another person who would love to slide into your job and you get let go.
If you all send emails with as many grammatical errors as you post here, you should be embarrassed. Along with the po-p your slinging.
