Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Non hub and remote

What is the rumor on the timeline to layoff the rest of the non-hub remote employees? Gone by Q4, 2024?

I am remote with an HR approved medical accommodation. So in teamworks it says YES to accommodation
TILL TODAY.

They changed it from Yes to No.

How is that?

Yes, thank you for the correction! Yes, you are right.

I was trying to figure out whether ‘remote due to an accommodation’ is being targeted in the same way / lumped into the same bucket as ‘remote because I’m by a hub but I’ve always been remote’ and ‘remote but I’m more than 40 miles from a WF site.’ Seems horrible that those working remote due to true (not made up) health reasons should be targeted. (I’m in none of these categories.)

"key locations" = Hyderabad, Manila, and if you're an exec, Hudson Yards. That's the full list.

Yes if you are remote and non hub consider your self gone. Pray it is this year as they are cutting the severance package in 2024.

The company is consolidating into key locations with a firm end date for completion at the corporate level. some business units will complete this consolidation sooner.

First on the hit list is anyone working remote without an accommodation, but within commuting distance of a current office. They will be told to start going into the office, or will be considered to have resigned. When this happens will vary from OC/LOB to OC/LOB but it will happen first and already is happening in some places, as evidenced by OP.

Then the non-core location exit will accelerate. it already began in finance last year, and in HR/recruiting this year. It will continue through the firm. This means remote people that are not near a go-forward enterprise location, and people in-office where those locations are being exited.

Exceptions highly restricted and subject to continuous scrutiny and rejustification - signed off at OC level.

@1rrg+1oKtO1zT Yes, of course there is a difference.

I suspect that was not your intended question. It is probably more along the lines of “Is an employee classified as Remote due to a Medical exception/waiver/accommodation safe from being terminated for being “remote”.?”

The answer to that question is No. Accommodations don’t automatically protect you from being let go for ANY reason, only specifically for the reason you have been granted the accommodation. The same as race, religion, se-ual orientation, etc.

So if your department had 10 remote workers and cut them all, unless they all had a matching protected class it would be perfect legal. They call even be protected classes, but not similar, and it would flesh out as legal. Although in that case I would assume a court battle. And to get around that all a company would have to do is offer you to work at another site anywhere and they are covered.

Is there a differentiation between someone who is remote, not by choice but because of a disability and someone who is remote because they are more than 40 miles from a hub?

"location strategy 3.0" will be closing the US hubs and finishing the job. Been fun folks.

Location Strategy 2.0 has come up regularly on my leadership calls over the past few months (CIB). Not sure at what point in 2025, but vast majority of non-hub remote people will be gone. Very few exceptions. Impacting our team and we are doing consent order work, which does not seem to matter.

Finance is already laying remote off. Received notice after over 30 years just because I'm remote, not by own choice, but because they closed our site. I know of about 20 people in finance in same situation. It's already happening and has been happening. Excuse me while I go train my replacement.

It was supposed to happen in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and now 2023.

I suggest you just wait for it.

Yes, the word is major layoffs October 3rd and October 17th and after that smaller layoffs until January 2024 and maybe by then we will have a new regime in place that will look out for the American workers and stop all this bleeding.
