I think the CEOs' salaries are screwing the place up.
There's this thing called competition. They can't just raising prices however they want regardless of the 'excuse' because their competitors will eat their lunch. I'm not sure how many times Detroit needs to fall on its face before we can acknowledge that unions are screwing the place up. Car companies operate in the south without union workers just fine, and none of those workers are poor. They make decent money and have decent benefits and their employer is actually competitive. Everyone wins. Orrr, we can set up completely unrealistic pay scales with dudes sweeping the floor making fat coin and just hope that the system doesn't go full Detroit again. 😐
Did you listen to the Ford CEO? Labor costs are just 4.6% of the cost of a new vehicle these days. If the union got everything they wanted it would be just 5.5% Car prices will only "skyrocket" as some are saying because the corporations recognize they can blame labor cost increases and the average person will believe them. Just like supply change got the blame for almost two years.
Check torque specs, check window molding? Wtf? I do all of that on my own car via YouTube videos and Google research.

Paint is thickness is inspected by machine as well as by sight for flaws.
Bolt torque is also by machine built into the tool.
Windscreens and seals are leak tested. Just need a pair of eyes and read a moisture meter.
Yes. They are unskilled and do not deserve to be paid for what they are asking. Key word here-asking. They won't get that but negotiations will get them somewhere in the middle.
Do they deserve a living wage? Yes. Everyone does. But not those numbers they are tossing around.
US automaker CEO pay through the roof? Absolutely. Look at Volks, I think there CEO is around 5 mil or something, maybe a bit higher but they have I think twice the revenue. Go figure.

The reason for 32 hr weeks is that overtime would then kick in after that. It’s a different way of negotiating pay increases, and as such it would be more than just the 20/he they are requesting.

Are you serious? I'm close to 100/hour and that's after 30 years in my field. These days, McDonalds pays 20 bucks an hour for burger flippers. And you think factory folks have no skills? Really? Man you have a lot to learn. At a high level it looks so simple. But when you get down in the weeds, it becomes much more complex. What happens for instance, when the rubber around the windshield is substandard? meaning that purchasers of said 50K vehicle will have water dripping on them while they drive? It matters! and cheap help won't care. You need folks who are dedicated and willing to step up and take ownership. You are not going to get that for wages less then burger flippers. Get real!!!! I want a quality product, and I want it built well, just for me, when I sign for a 6 or 7 year loan to buy it. And then transport my family in it. Get a clue buddy. Good employees - make good product. Happy employees - will buy the product they make. That's what I want to buy for my family. Period.

If it’s less than $40/hour, then that means YOU don’t have any skills. And/or you don’t think you’re worth more than you’re making. .
If you make more than $40 hour - what makes you think you deserve more than them?
How many folks at WF got 30% increases over the past 2 years? I've seen next to NOTHING. And thats for a "meets". So, in effect, I've taken a 25% pay CUT. Yes CUT. So now I'm not living as well as I used to, but can still buy ribeyes and porterhouse steaks now and then. Only becuase I was above the average.
Those factory folks - now they were reaching for the good life, those same steaks, etc. Except, inflation STOLE those wages and gave them in effect, pay cuts. So I don't begrudge them their strike, and demanded increases. If only we could do that at WF. But, we have nothing, no one, who will advocate for us. So, like it or leave it is the rule.
No way will I trash the factory workers for demanding their due. CEO's making millions can take a cut to give the folks who make them millions....a bit of a raise.
We all have families and things we want to do. Who is anyone to complain for a husband or wife to make more to support their families?????
UAW workers with substandard pay? They are already overpaid. They don't do cr-p and don't have any skills. The only skill they have is to hold people ransom.
Every dollar in profit these companies make is another dollar the UAW will go after. Then when those dollars dry up, they will go after another government bailout. That is the only natural outcome.

@qea Why bother complaining about prices? All you do by whining about things getting more expensive is perpetuate the acceptance of substandard wages. Corporations want to raise prices, it's been the biggest driver of inflation since the pandemic but you're here arguing that wages need to stay flat?
Are cars too expensive? Maybe your employer should pay you more so that you can have a decent standard of living, instead. Something is wrong with the equation if you can't afford an average vehicle, average residence, and average food on an average income.
The average price of a new car in the US is already over $48,000. The UAW is asking for a 40% wage increase and cutting back to 32 hours/week... while still being paid for 40 hrs/wk. That's insane. I hope the Bernie Bros understand what will happen to the price of cars if the UAW gets their way.

I don’t understand the 32 hour work weeks, but the 40% wage increase gets the average auto worker to $40/hour. That’s not extravagant, especially compared to the $20M to $30M the CEO’s are making.
Tell the Executives to cut their compensation packages and then car prices won’t go through the roof.

Yes, the UAW demands are totally reasonable:
The union started with a demand for an immediate 20% raise, and four additional raises of 5% each over the course of a four-year deal.
Ford and GM are now offering a 20% raise during the life of the contract, and Stellantis is offering 17.5%.
40% pay increase AND 32-hour weeks... great way to quickly be replaced by robots or offshore workers.
Have you actually looked at the UAW demands? They're absolutely ridiculous and would drive already expensive prices on new cars through the roof.

This will backfire on the UAW, unfortunately, when the big 3 export their jobs overseas for cheaper labor. Watch and see.
