Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Leadership

Across the board, it’s truly the worst I’ve ever seen. Anywhere. At any time. In any company. I’m old, and have been around for a while. I’ve seen a lot. This is next level however and It’s really starting to affect the day to day jobs of the people who are just trying to get the work done in a noticeable way (productivity- timelines-etc) it almost seems to me that it’s intentional. I waffle back and forth between “they’re TRYING to make us fail” and “they’re just THAT incompetent”. Either way, makes for an unbelievably toxic environment and makes life miserable for anyone that strives to do a good job and knows their business. At least in my function, there are still a lot of low levels that know the businesses very well, take pride in their work, and want to do a good job for the customer. They’re regularly hamstrung by leadership however. So more and more leave.

DEA arrived at HON as part of an acquisition in 2008. He then met Johnny boy who led the integration of said acquisition. Their eyes met and Cupid shot his toxic leader love arrow. DEA ruthlessly pushed out NG to become HPS president in 2012 then became PMT leader in 2014. He brought VK from India to lead HPS in 2014. In 2016 DEA was announced as CEO. He had very little time in HPS or PMT. VK grew up in HPS. DEA picked RG instead of VK to lead PMT in 2016. An arguable huge mistake as he sent VK to lead HBT and gain more experience. It wasn’t until RG knotted up PMT that DEA then left VK have it to fix. Just like VK is now fixing everything on a larger scale.

When Johnny boy is finally gone along with GL then we will know DEA has finally been forced to cut the puppet strings.

As much as every Honeywell employee wishes that VK would have more empathy for tortured souls and revive the brand to its purposed glory, I will not be holding my breath for it to happen. Reason is simple. DEA was from PMT, VK is from PMT. DEA selected VK as his successor. VK will take on the splitting image of DEA in the handling of the business since VK had never had anyone else to follow which may have taught him otherwise.

The entire time DA was CEO people speculated that he was getting the company ready to be sold or sold off in pieces. Rumors were nonstop. He cut and cut and cut even more. It went beyond discipline and rigor to impractical cost cutting while he made millions every year and paid the Johnny boys like JW and GL their millions. It should be criminal to make millions at the cost of a company that’s been around for so long and was profitable for so long. He plundered then left VK in charge of the fiasco. The only option VK will have is divesting or offshoring or both. No one will know until DA actually goes away instead of hanging on like he is now. DC moved on as chairman and left DA in charge. DA is still calling the shots and telling VK what to do. The board may have to force him to move on since he doesn’t seem to be taking the hint.

@2rhy+1oBe6bui Honeywell certainly fell off the cliff at this point, it was already very concerning that DC was barred from viewing the financials when he started his tenure, the Allied Signal board was already showing their hand then and he had a tough job on his hands.
The change to DA was just horrendous, actually an unmitigated disaster.
The only way himself and the board could maintain an upwards trajectory of the stock price was to aggressively strip the business, personally I feel that he did a number on Honeywell.
VK has only self interest at heart much like DA, he will likely pursue and identical path.
IF he simplifies the business by selling / disposing half of it I will change my mind as that is what truly needs to be done at this point. Only then can it have a future.

All public companies have this type of leadership. If you want a more chill environment, move to Tech industry where capital is thrown around. Honeywell is manufacturing conglomerate and relies on efficiency. Remember, investor community dictates what metrics we manage to.

I think DC built strong leadership but the last CEO had an abusive leadership style and chose people who led like that. That’s how you get the Johnny boys and his cronies. In order to have leaders who won’t object but will instead support the mistreatment of the people of an organization, the org will have to resort to some pretty bad leaders. Most good leaders have some minimum level of ethics and decency. To treat people as badly as they do, they have to abandon basic human decency. DEA produced a culture of bottom feeder executive leaders who behave like school yard bullies. I don’t see the new CEO in that same category but if he doesn’t purge the Johnny boys and bring in or raise up leaders more like himself, not much will change. The bullies will keep soaking up the millions in compensation while causing diminished business returns and the working class will keep getting squeezed harder and harder.

Oh, but didn’t you complete the VOE and didn’t your boss take an active part in fixing the hurdles? (Note sarcasm)

I was one of those chumps, but have officially been trained to shut up and do the minimum because nothing is going to get done anyway.

Still a chump in a way though because I can’t seem to get out.

Completely agree. Anxiety a couple of days prior to the end of vacation is the new norm for me.

The gangrene always starts at the top. It's the old story of the valueless leading the blind. While there will always be a lineup of chumps at the hamster wheel, most are useless and only there to line their pockets before something easier comes their way.
