Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

A failure of leadership

Imagine a world where as a leader you are applauded for outsourcing or laying off your self-proclaimed most valuable asset, the people who install the service, take the customers call, process the data, sell the service, collect the payments, etc.

These are the same leaders who failed to support or grow revenue.

In the end, the first two levels of employees are held accountable for the 6 levels above them. Upper management is unaccountable for failure and now believe eliminating the people who do the work translates to success.

It’s a cabal that supports themselves at the expense of others. All the evidence you need is shown in the hierarchy. Levels 3, 4, 5, and 6 with a few direct reports or much lower level reports to give the appearance of a large span of control.

It’s tragic and ethically criminal

It is because most "managers" are individual contributors, they don't have any direct reports. They are only classified as "managers" to make them exempt so they can't claim overtime.

Surprised how small L2 to L1 ratio is.

Some area managers has 3 or less people.

What ever happened to span of control?

I was told to move someone just to help with the perception of manager to headcount ratio.

Our VP is so far removed from anyone who isn’t working on something that will get him exposure.

If you’re on a hard working team that is necessary for the business it doesn’t matter it’s not se-y enough for the VPs trying to keep their jobs.

What they aren’t getting is it’s these “boring work” teams that if they stopped, there would be a noticeable stop in service and build.

But it’s contagious. 5 only reports the cool stuff to 6 and on and on.

Has it ever occurred to leadership to recognize all teams? It would go a long way.
