Life is great in Des Moines, my biggest concern is it going down the path of other cities politically and economically. Please keep that stuff away from here, thanks.

Depends on the person. I have, unfortunately, lived in several big coastal cities. "Hip and happening" places by consensus. I hated it. Way to crowded, way to expensive, way to regulated, and way to dirty. To distant from nature, and to close to people. It's pretty horrendous quality of life. I agree that there is demand, and it's primarily because a very large majority of people aren't all that bright.
I wouldn't want to live in a big city like Des Moines, but I'm sure there's many places in Iowa that would be really nice.
Not a hater here. I remember when Mortgage carried the bank when other LOBS were in the toilet. I'm in one of those other LOBS. If you want to hate, then direct it where it belongs with Charlie and the BOD. They are the creators of the toxicity we endure.
Des Moines is on that list because it's cheap to live there. Why is it cheap to live someplace? Because no one else wants to live there. Supply and demand. Young people don't have money, they need cheap. Iowa is cheap because no one wants to live there.
The rest of the top 5 is also the Midwest. The Midwest is cheap because...you guessed it!

I'd like to see these kinds of ratings without the "lifestyle" section (completely subjective) and with a larger sampling of cities. Why top 100 by population? Probably intentionally to exclude a lot of great places. Even worse is the 'places to live' ratings that take diversity into account, as if most people even GAF.
