Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

This is only the beginning

Realize this is only the beginning, I know this is no comfort to those who have been laid off this go around, but would you rather be ahead of the wave or on in the middle of it. I was on a conference call a week ago with our VP who stated, after being badgered by several attendees, that the company intends to reduce headcount an additional 50K employees by the end of 2024. After Stankey stated that headcount reductions would be approx. 15K this year, through normal attrition, Surpluses, & RTO, a far worse blood bath is coming in 2024, most of that being management, you do the math. Does anyone remember the Old AT&T that SBC purchased, AT&T at that time had 5K managers and 50K contractors. This is already occurring in the new AT&T. AT&T at some point in the future will just be a store front for many 3rd party companies on the backend running the show while AT&T slaps their name on it. So for those of you who did get cut, you have more opportunities to attain gainful employment while being in front of the wave, rather than having to compete with the bulk of the wave to come. Once again, I know that it isn't very comforting but it is what it is...

Who in their right mind would want to buy a company with such a high amount of debt, $135B on the balance sheet doesn't look very attractive to a smart business leader not to mention an incredibly competitive industry to boot!

This definitely will NOT be the last wave. What we are going through now is only for 2023.

Next year, 2024 is a whole other opportunity with surplus writing still on the wall!

Once cash flow will be restarted a CEO will be re--rded enough again to reboot new acquisitions. That will be the new begining. I know about it as I watched Alien franchise carefully.

This has been happening for the last 40 years since I began with the company. Get used to it people. It never ends.

Old AT&T had way more than 5k managers in 2004-5. That's not remotely credible.

It did a bunch of cutting and releveling leading up to the sale but nothing like what is suggested here.

Cuts on this scale would leave the company unable to function and meet contractual obligations and regulatory requirements. So either he didn't say it, he misspoke, or he was referring to some scenario of spinoffs or outsourcings. Which don't result in immediate job loss, because a new entity needs people who know where the bodies are buried.

And anyway, I'd rather get surplused next year than this year, but that's just me.

This bozo tells us “this is only the beginning” after those of us still left at this company and who have been here for 10+ years have been watching this happen repeatedly over the last several years.

This is not the beginning, this is a continuation. A continuation of poor leadership and bad decisions. Where does it end? No one knows, no one here knows anything but rumors and speculation.

However, if you have half a brain, you know that this is not “only the beginning”. How absurd.

Still, though, if T is seriously wanting to cut headcount by nearly a third in the next 18 months, it looks more and more like T is posturing itself for a sale.

This was just a copy paste of a previous comment that apparently didn't get enough reactions.
