Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Curious on why...

Does anyone know why the decision was made to surplus most of the Learning & Development group in favor of outsourcing to a 'vendor'/contractor group? I heard today that about 200 people were told this was their fate today. Will the company really benefit from this move? I worry about the quality of the training going forward.

How are we going to get new training about pronouns and genders? As the list of new genders grow how will we keep up. Who will train us on how to designate safe spaces or round up the mice in the buildings for emotional support animals for them to pet?

Anything non-critical to operation of core networks will be cut, slashed, burned, or sold asap. The piper finally came to town, and he now wants paid, fully and soon. Wow, shocker.

More economical to outsource.

In related news, all new training will be in Hindi.

Leading with Distinction and all the AT&T University stuff was favorite child of Stephenson. He liked to invite these Harvard or artsy people to big meetings once a year or twice a year and have people attend conferences. It was good while it lasted but it was all superficial. No learning. Mostly good for socialization.

Probably will see some of these folks as contractors doing the same work they did at T. Good luck to all

Is this the group that makes all those PLE training classes?

Oh no, how on earth will we get “training” via cartoons apparentl aimed at 4 year olds? I can’t learn unless a janky-animated goblin is squeaking at me.

Hey all. I'm in L&D Design. We were told that all Design positions are eliminated. New "vendor mgmt" roles will be created in Dallas/Atlanta. Many companies have done this for a long time, rather than having internal L&D. It's no surprise. It's cheaper and easier to buy training a-la-carte rather than having hundreds of tenured, expensive employees on payroll. Just the medical and 401k savings for the company alone is enough to outsource the jobs. Some trainers are safe, but that's only while this transition happens. Soon, they will start having new hires come directly to teams to take their web training and onboarding. This is exactly how some companies operate today. And, let's be honest, AT&T isn't exactly leading the industry in any categories. The whole thing sucks. It's just bad decision after bad decision from the top. The CEO has lost over 20% of the stock value since he took over, lost 70,000 employees, lost money on DTV and Warner, and still got an 18% raise and millions in bonuses.

From what I heard, T is surplussing designers, curriculum managers, personal consultants, ADs, the PMO group, etc. I think they're keeping some of the trainers? They pretty much gutted the Learning and Development group. I believe they've developed a new role, which will probably act as a liaison between the vendor and the clients. But people will have to apply for that role and I think they have to be in Dallas.

Because T never valued learning or development. It was all just another bit of performance by Stink to try and mollify the employees and give them the false hope that T would acknowledge the effort and it would be considered for professional career advancement.

It was all a lie. I did all my mandatory T training, did a bunch of stuff through T University, and even got two Nanodegrees. Shoot, my old T-Space page had more badges and awards than a fascist dictator's uniform! I even won the SEA. And I was surplussed in late 2019.

T University was as legitimate as Trump University, and when things got dodgy Stink just dumped it because it wasn't really ever a thing.

What roles are they outsourcing? Designers? Trainers? AT&T uses a lot of outsource Trainer’s already for ramping up vendor centers. Many of them were former AT&T instructors. A lot of companies 100% outsource all their training. Not shocked it’s happening.

Folks… clue in… the company is going to be divided up and sold. The remaining pieces will file for bankruptcy due to debt. Don’t need training to go out of business. Thanks Stevenson, Stevens and Stankey… only took you 13 years to destroy an American Blue Chip…

As one of those affected, it’s all about costs. It’s cheaper to outsource.
