Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

People going away

I notice that lately there are a lot of people who are leaving. I'm happy for anyone who gets a better offer and leaves here.
On the other hand, slackers and mediocrity are not leaving, only good people continue to leave.

What is this company turning into? How will it all look with a bunch of incompetent inflated egos?

People close to getting their pension will try to stay until that day comes.
I see a phase of people leaving once they hit that day.

The pension has not been available for several years. Anyone that was eligible for it would be vested by now, right? What is this magic date you are referring to? I think the pension the union folks have grows exponentially as they age, unlike the management pensions (at least the one I have).

From what I am hearing the new RTO mandate did not go over very well. Apparently, they were seeing in excess of 50% of the affected workers advising they were going to leave. Myself the focus is to get to the age for full retirement then look if at what other options are out there as I ride into the sunset towards SS etc.... Even some of the recently let go people back early this year are now contractors working for a partner to try to keep the boat afloat.

ATS (not sure about other groups) as per the docs they released related to RTO have not had to officially indicate if they will relocate. In fact their FAQ said the official letter to relocate is not going out until later this summer. That is wave 1. They have 2 additional waves, with the last not requiring relocation til I think ‘25 or ‘26. I am interested to hear from you where the take rate is 50% and the total number of people that have had to officially give their response to having to relocate.

I hope you do not have too many more years to reach full retirement age and I hope you are lucky enough to finish here at T.

Stankey said he expected 15,000 fewer people to be working here by the end of the year. If that turns out to be 20 or 25,000, they would probably be happy with it. Layoffs of this size aren’t about getting rid of good or bad people, they are just about getting rid of people. The culture cr-p is a sideshow to try distract from the fact that this is mainly a layoff/cost cutting exercise.

A couple of people on my team are not relocating and will leave. However, I think most of those on my team who survive this are likely to stay at least in the near term.

I have been through this stuff elsewhere and have started applying out but it is not easy. Finding a job right is even worse than before. I’ve had a couple of interviews but even when they appear to go well (hiring mgr saying they want to put you in touch with their colleagues and the like) there is a good chance you will be ghosted. A lot of people don’t want to deal with this on top of their regular job.

However, in my experience the best thing to do even if you appear safe is to start the process so you don’t get caught flat-footed when they come for your head.

For me this whole thing is frustrating and depressing because while I have only been here for a few years, I generally had a good experience and it’s not easy to find places with 401k matches/PTO and other benefits that match T (try working at startups or smaller companies and you will see). I think that and the mess that is the current job market is why more people than you think will stick around if they are allowed to, even “good” people with options.

This is a false narrative, you are generalizing that good people have immediate options and everyone else who may not is bad. You clearly have zero clue about the dynamics of surplus.

Well yeah, good people don't want to stick around to deal with the mess, and likely more BS for the next few years, if they're lucky. They know they can find something better now, why wait? There are many more that are not leaving yet, but want to, just waiting to take that severance.
