Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

RTO

RTO is certainly a move to reduce the workforce. Many jobs that have been remote for decades, not just since the pandemic, have been told they must report to Dallas or leave the company. No severance. The timing of each business unit has been staggered over the past few weeks. I’ve talked with many managers with 20+ years that have just been told move or quit. Unfortunately, this is a blunt force object in reducing the workforce done with no strategy of function or talent/experience of the employees. As a result, what is left will be far lest talented than the current workforce.

To the OP -- This has simply not been true up to this point. If we've missed a fact or two, please feel free to post examples and names.

What a group. Someone asked a question that seems to be an honest ask and you down voted it. No wonder this company is in the toilet.

Company needs optimization in all titles with a V in it, flatten the layers of BS. That would have some positive impact.

This whole RTO is because of remote workers. Yes many have done it for decades, that means there is plenty of data about remote work.

One main finding is that virtual workers tend to NOT retire in the same timeframe as office workers. The company counts on attrition to “be out with old, in with the new”.

AT&T already knew remote workers stay years longer than those who go to an office. They could see the writing on the wall with such a large percentage of workers still at home.

The commute and cost, to the employee, working in office is a way AT&T can “help” people make the decision to leave when it’s time.

Virtual work only extends the career and costs associated with tenured employees.

One question for the “hired as remote” folks. Did your hiring agreement contain any wording about your work locations never changing or that you would never be changed from remote work?

While it is true RTO is about firing employees, it’s not true that no severance is given. Moreover, the overwhelming majority of those fired (one of whom was me last Tuesday) were not offered the opportunity to relocate.

The entire exercise is about firing people and reducing real estate holdings.

STOP with the Effing drama and get back to work. The company has every right to ask us to RTO and/or change the reporting work location.

Employees have every right to strike and cease operations until demands are met. For starters, fixing the trash benefits.

Some of use were hired to work remotely from day one and now the company says we must report to an office you have never been too, or an office that is over a hundred miles away?
Quit trying defend Stankey. It will provide you no benefit.
The broom is sweeping wide right now and it will soon find the piles of dust in the corners and find you @ath+1ni1yEYt.

For the love of all that is Holy please stop with the “no severance” BS. It is exhausting. It has been covered over and over again and verified over and over again

There is severance if the location is 50 miles from existing location.
