Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Spend the weekend looking for a new job

Don't wait too long or you might find yourself in competition with too many of your former coworkers. It won't ruin your weekend if you go to several job boards (like Glassdoor, Indeed, and similar ones), look through what's available, and send out your resume to a few of them. This is one thing you shouldn't put off.

I think the ex HR person here has offered some great advice regarding what the actual job search is like. It's not really an overnight thing except if you get lucky. It seems to help if you are still employed, so I would not really wait until your time is up.

I'm glad to hear that some people think the "pronoun" game on linkedin is bullsh-t. I see a lot of recruiters list their pronouns, and I think they are a pain in the a-s. I feel like if I am not complying with their politically correct pronoun culture I'm not going to get hired. Even worse are the companies that have about 15 different selections to make for self identifying my birth s-x.

Former T HR employee here. It reads like there might be some folks on this board who’ve never worked anywhere but T. Just some FYIs for those of you who want to know how this works.

It takes MONTHS to find new job. Let alone the online application process. Applying to one job can take hours. Start now.

You’ll need a LinkedIn profile ASAP with a great CV to get past the bots. If you feel lost and overwhelmed by this, just copy and paste the FORMAT (NOT someone’s accomplishments; don’t lie - trust me: you’ll get caught one way or another). But DO use the format of a great resume you see on LinkedIn (the format popular in the early aughts is very dated now).

Think of your career as a story with an arc and a clear pov and a narrative, and think of yourself as a brand. List quantifiable data. Companies want to know how you can save them money OR make them money. List out percentages of revenue you saved or generated; this is very important.

Some people will tell you NOT to list anything that gives away your age. This is stupid advice and when people don’t list years out, straight away we know you’re older and afraid of ageism. Which does exist. But the best way to combat it is to create a great narrative and use your brand and years of experience to your advantage. Trust me: plenty of companies want older employees for myriad reasons.

Do NOT list your preferred pronouns unless you want NO ONE to contact you. We see pronouns and we think PAIN IN THE BUTTOCKS.

As far a T goes, some germane FYIs:

If you lie and say you’re moving and then don’t, you don’t get your severance.

If you DO get severance you don’t get to collect unemployment until the severance expires (so 6 months of severance = 24 weeks until employment kicks in). But you can go ahead and apply. It’s a nightmare, just FYI.

Most companies you end up at will either have a 90 day window before you can begin their 401k program, or they’ll make you wait until 2024, so max out what you can NOW.

If you’re a high earner and you’ve already maxed out your SS contributions you’ll have to pay into it AGAIN if you get a job this year, and then you’ll get reimbursed when you file your taxes for 2023 in 2024.

If ANY of you did an FSA and not an HSA, burn thru it. NOW. 100% legal. Assumption of risk goes both ways: you risk not using it by 4/15 of the following year and losing your contributions, and the company risks you using it all and leaving before the calendar year expires. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve done this. Let’s just write I have many pairs of very nice designer eyeglasses I purchased at the optometrist office and a $1300 HEPA vacuum because of my severe allergies ; )

Good luck everyone!

To the comment above about att getting rid of long term employees. I think alot of employees with 40 or more years of swrvice need to be pushed out. Thats the problem on why alot of younger close to the 30 wont retire because they dont want to leave.

"Im not applying for another job until I’m offered severance"

Whatever you want, but HR onboarding onto a new job typically takes at least a month. If you're a strong candidate for a position, they're fine with waiting til X date before you start.

Personally I want to line up a job so that by the time my letter rolls around, I have some "eff you" equity.

Im not applying for another job until I’m offered severance, won’t be long. I have already prepared, all it takes is a few clicks and I’m back in the job market. Not allowing them to enrich themselves from not paying one of my few benefits left, they made the decision to give me a choice. I choose to stay local and move on to other employment, after getting my severance. This is a poorly disguised, age discriminatory layoff for long term employees. Stankey already gave the tell with his comment about employee reductions of 15k by year end and how they are going about it.

I’m not doing that on the weekend. That’s a Mon-Fri thing.

If you are just now starting to prepare your home for a move, updating your resume or starting a search for a new job, you are really behind.

Really, you want me to start looking for a job? John said he has a job for me in a hub. Are you saying he is lying?

I am doing wrist exercises to prepare for burger flipping. Although my guess they automated that process already with robots.

Alternatively, spend Monday on webphone. Use the chain of command function to navigate up to a VP, click the direct reports button, set the drop down level to 6 to see everyone, look for contractors (you can use prepare results or just look for people with no phone number), click on one, verify they are a non-employee and look at their contract company. Then look for job opportunities at that contract company. In 6 months or so, you’ll be doing the same job, from your home, for a little more pay, but with no benefits. That’s all Stankey wants, to fire old people and take away their retirement benefits and get himself a big fat paycheck bonus. He doesn’t care if the work gets done, he just wants his money.
