Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Whew! made it through one shoe drop

Now just waiting on the next shoe to drop, after nearly 25 years of constant layoffs and reorganization a cat with nine lives has nothing on me. Good luck and prayers for all those impacted, hope you find a better position outside of AT&T and some peace.

Long story, shortened. Sometimes we go have to go through a long valley to reach the next mountaintop! I recently experienced that myself with this company, after much prayer a door briefly opened, I was able to move on to a better position, work life balance and much less stress. That door shut immediately after I accepted and a hiring freeze has been in place since then. I’m now in about a secure of a position that you can be with the current environment. Sometimes change opens the door for better possibilities even when we don’t see it due to our own myopic sight.

Similar thing happened very recently with my spouse, lost a job due to a business closure then was hired by another company for a short time. It didn’t work out for various reasons and she didn’t understand, why? Very distraught and after much prayer, two days later out of the blue was called by a person she had interviewed with 9 months prior to this call. Previously, she didn’t understand at the time why no offer had been made, even though she was well qualified. Present, after a short reinterview, was offered an even better position than the one she had been trying to get for 10 years. Wow…did that just happen? Doesn’t always work on our timeframe but when it happens, it’s Awesome! Our time is not his time, so we are learning patience is a virtue.

I’m speaking to someone who needs encouragement and hope during this stressful time. That someone is You!

Is that the best you have? Now relief from not being involved in a layoff and dodging the proverbial bullet is Stockholm Syndrome, give me a break. Kind of a reach there and looking to label someone from a short post. If uncertainty, anguish is the qualifier then 98% of AT&T employees qualify to see a counselor after working for this toxic top down regimen.Telling people to move on after long rewarding careers until incompetent SBC leadership happened and not accepting or challenging the new status quo is a sycophant move.

Let’s just talk about the real elephant in the room, incompetent tone deaf leadership with well documented and repeated failures. Largest private and probably government debt in human history, huge stock drop bigger than the market or competition, divided cut, shrinking revenues, multiple missed financial projections, selling of assets, little to no growth or new products, small investment in R&D, benefit cuts, policy changes, ongoing reorganization and layoffs, constantly changing direction with no stability or long term business planning. CEO and comrades are flying by the seat of their pants and losing badly without any consequences. Could add much, much more but I think we all get the picture, shuffling chairs on the Titanic.

I had to read this post a couple of times before I realized what about it was troubling: it's because it almost seems as if the OP is a hostage who has finally succumbed to Stockholm Syndrome.

The OP talks about anguish and uncertainty, but then exhales with relief that he hasn't been laid off in the same way an psychologically broken hostage would discuss worrying about an upcoming execution only to be relieved when the bullet hit someone else.

I don't blame the OP. T has created this culture of abuse and psychological oppression that ends up breaking far too many of the workers. When someone is constantly subjected to threats that affect their lives, only for each time to escape the damage, it really forks with their heads, and at some point one becomes like an animal so grateful that they haven't been whipped or sla-ghtered that they react with gratitude and an enhanced attachment to their tormentor.

My advice to OP would be to find a new job as quickly as possible, and to consider seeing a counselor, because this post just seems like a cry of desperation.

People, save yourself, get out while you can! There is no future with AT&T because management has made it very clear that you're not wanted! T no longer wants lifers working here, so there's no opportunity for growth with the company! What would be the point of staying if you're not wanted?

After years of playing musical chairs with surpluses. I didn’t have one when the music stopped in 2020. During the height of the pandemic, AT&T decided it was time to start two weeks notice and off payroll as opposed to the 60 days they used to give. So I packed up the personal items in my office the night before my last day and left in the dark. Took a few days to realize my decades of work really didn’t mean anything to the company but the accomplishments and good people I knew were what was really important. I counted my blessings, health, life, friends and family.I moved on both mentally and physically. I am still working, making a little less but very happy. My new company has respect for its people and values them as integral to the success of the company. It is a shame how poor management decisions over the last 20 years have put this once great company into a financial death spiral. Free cash flow is collapsing, wireless is a commodity and I believe the dividend is at risk if the company is to be saved. AT&T would have been acquired already except for toxic billions of debt on the balance sheet that resulted from these foolish business ventures. All top management must be replaced to have any hope of saving this company. To all who were shown the door, keep the faith, take care of yourselves and know that there is life after AT&T. If you are retained, invest in yourself, get your resume and LinkedIn updated and you will land in a good place in the future.

Great Post OP!

I think some are missing the point, obviously the OP and Spouse were offered and accepted new positions after layoffs so they had to have the education, updated skills, experience and or certs. They took care of the marketable side of things, I believe the post is about spirituality too. Something that is beyond human capabilities, the X-factor. Making the impossibilities, possible and this post is an encouragement for me personally. Sometimes I get caught up in the now and become too myopic. I’m now looking for the next door! Seek and you shall find.

Thank You OP!!!

After 25 years you really need to look at how far you have to go. This BS will never stop. It goes on hold for a few years, at least in parts of the business, but then it comes back. As a previous "leader of the business " once posted in a video in the old T, we're on a bus, and eventually, everyone gets off the bus.

Think about your situation if the next one or the one after takes you out.

Don't want to be a downer but these are times for people to reflect and maybe make hard choices. Such as, refresh skills, take a position elsewhere for less $, but one that sets you up stay to marketable through the time you want your career to end.

OP here, sorry if I offended you, not my intention. I’ve been in layoffs before too, both prior to working for AT&T and also was surplussed in 2012 at AT&T but was able to land another position . So I know what it feels like and have empathy for those going through it now. The story I posted has no animosity or vitriol , it only was meant to encourage and give hope that there can be better tomorrows.

I was just stating the obvious relief for those not getting the call this time because we know we could be next. Wasn’t meant to be insensitive, no joy in seeing others distressed because I know the feeling of raw nerves and emotions when one is displaced.

Wishing you well if you are one of those impacted, another door is waiting for you to open!

Please, would love nothing more than to be laid off from this very poorly managed or highly mismanaged company! Just show me the money and I'm gone for good never to be heard from again! AT&T is in a very sad state of affairs!

Celebrating how you didn't get laid off on a board where lots of people just got laid off and many more are stressed as he-l. There's a lot more bullsh-t coming. Read the room dude.
