"We attempted to accomplish this workforce realignment through voluntary attrition"
"How did they attempt to do that?"
"Oh, they didn't. It's to make you feel better, like this was a last resort."

This... There were no voluntary or expression of interest offers to my knowledge. The company doesn't do MVO anymore. They were simply referring to normal BAU attrition, where people leave for one reason or another. But that's not going to get them any big cost savings, which is why we have the Surplus and RTO initiatives.

The company is saying Surplus & RTO are separate and unrelated, but actually both are happening now to reduce costs as fast as possible. It's pretty obvious what their intent is.

I'm sad to see people surplussed without being given an option to RTO.

If the job or person is no longer needed why would they consider RTO? RTO= return to office” some number of days per week in a location yet to be revealed…what you said makes no sense.

I am happy to see all those trolls loudly proclaiming "no severance" were as full of sh-t as we thought they were.

The comments made like that were people saying no severance as it relates to RTO. Like a previous post, why are people so confused and uninformed? There is a surplus event and an RTO event. While many think the objective is the same they are two different activities. Geeezus people.

For ATS people… was there a group call or are they picking people off one by one as the day progresses?

I am one of 314 engineers on the surplus list for today. All under C. Anthony. Implementation/Planners, etc. Almost everyone was 45 - 60 year olds. Yes, we get severance.

I’m truly sorry for all of you that are having to go through this. I hope that you all find something soon and come out of it better in the end. The rest of us left behind will have to continue to do more with less in hopes that we aren’t simply cut as well in the next round (there will be countless more rounds of this). What an absolutely miserable time to be working for this company.

Oh, they didn't. It's to make you feel better, like this was a last resort. I still have my letter from a previous round and, while the verbiage has changed slightly, it's still mostly dry explanation with a bit of placating

"We attempted to accomplish this workforce realignment through voluntary attrition, however, additional reductions are necessary."

Can confirm, it's in my letter too. The same exact letter overall, in fact. I find this line interesting, though. How did they attempt to do that? There was no voluntary surplus offer, and if it's via RTO, well people still don't know if, when or how they're expected to handle it. If it was after the RTO, and they had some numbers, it would make sense, but they don't.

"Why do people keep conflating RTO and move to hubs, with the current surplus?"

Well, they are related, but as we're now finding out, it may be one or the other, even for different people on the same team. I was told the RTO would affect me, even asked if I had any preliminary thoughts on moving, but I couldn't answer until I had all the information. Today I got a standard surplus notification via an unnecessarily awkward phone call with a supervisor and a follow-up email. Maybe it's because I didn't give them an indication that I would move, so they just made it easier for everyone? I don't know. At this point, I just wanted to make sure I get the severance, and I am, but again, I wasn't actually asked to move and declined, I'm just being surplussed.

I'm not hearing anything about RTO, which I was told I would be affected by, but I'm afraid I can't tell you guys that it's a good thing. I did hear something else, and it is that I'm being simply surplussed instead. July 6th is the last day.

Over the past several weeks we have been evaluating certain business units within AT&T to ensure our
future workforce is best aligned to meet the competitive challenges we’re facing. Reducing our workforce is
a difficult decision that we don’t take lightly. We attempted to accomplish this workforce realignment through
voluntary attrition; however, additional reductions are necessary. As a result and after a thorough and careful
review, we have determined that the position which you currently hold will be eliminated. As a result of this
decision, you will be placed on surplus status, effective the day following the date that appears at the top of
this letter, and your employment will end on 07/06/2023.
You will receive severance benefits under the terms of the AT&T Severance Pay Plan if you meet the eligibility
criteria.
Resources requiring your review and attention are available to you online via the Surplus Transition Portal
website. You will be able to access the Surplus Transition Portal from an AT&T work location, your home, or
other external location. This site will remain accessible to you for up to 97 days (105 days for Minnesota
residents) following your last day on payroll.
In light of their importance, you should access the Surplus Transition Portal resources as soon as possible.
So on, and so forth

There's a call, but you're emailed a pdf with pretty much what your supervisor said, as well as a list of links/resources/etc.

Trust me on this one, I'm looking at it

Why do people keep conflating RTO and move to hubs, with the current surplus?

Most (as confirmed here), including my own group under Luong were informed that their plan for the RTO/ hub initiative is still under review/ awaiting approvals. Best case is end of June early July more likely, to hear anything new on that front.

There IS a current surplus going on right now, as we speak, in the ACE org under Sambar. Calls are being made, and the script is being read. There is no "letter".
