Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

How attractive is this place to young people?

I would say almost not attractive at all, but it obviously takes time for the top dogs to realize it.

If you are a young techie, go some place where your skills will be valued. AT&T is mostly a PR, M&A, financial engineering and sales/advertising/marketing shop now, and not a very good one at that.

It’s as attractive as Rosie O'Donnell in a thong.

from op
"Company needs new leadership and a new vision.... going down a Fiber and 5G road is going down a commodity road and that will means more layoffs, continued cost-cutting and a risky future."

This is the exact problem. Wireless (cell) and internet services are a commodity. ATT has wasted years and money trying to be something else.

10 - 20 years ago, I would have recommended AT&T to friends and young family members as a good, (not great) place to work. Sadly, the many botched acquisitions, the horrendous debt and total lack of senior leadership no longer make this an attractive place to learn and grow.

The culture has become toxic, where layoffs happen all the time and everyone is looking over their shoulder waiting to hear they have been let go or need to move to Dallas or Atlanta. Since when did Dallas become the center of the universe??? When Randall and Stankey said so???? Well if that's' the case, why should we get behind that decision? How many great decisions / gaffes have they made together??

Company needs new leadership and a new vision.... going down a Fiber and 5G road is going down a commodity road and that will means more layoffs, continued cost-cutting and a risky future.

Best of luck to everyone. You and your families deserve better.

How attrcatvie is AT&T... on a scale of 1-10,,,,3

Young people want to WFH. They grew up with tablets in their hands as toddlers. There is no way they would choose this over a wfh job.

Well, the RTO is a big deterrent. Younger employees want more flexibility. The demeaning attitude of “you don’t matter” has got to change. McE sounded ridiculous in that video with his utter disdain for employees and their individuality and accomplishments. You cannot treat the younger generation like they are just a number and that is his attitude through and through. It’s insulting at best. He’s smug about it too.

The maternity/paternity leave is extensive. Much better than when I had my kids just a year prior to the boost. Parental caregiver leave is also extensive. Those are things young people want - time to have their families and time to care for the aging parents.

The rest is fairly standard. The new wellness account structure is OK but definitely worse and more complicated than the previous one.

Young workers do not visit this site.
Remember when you first started, you just worried about your assigned tasks - not upper management.
For IT workers, FAANG is their goal. They all lay for a "cooler" job after a couple of years at ATT. ATT can not keep interns, maybe 1 in 15 stay.

I was just asking my soon to be graduate kid about their future. They said they can’t wait to work for a lead cable superfund site company, saddled with debt from failed M&A activities, poorly led by an old boy network that rewards loyal employees with layoffs and reversals of promised retirement benefits. I was slow to pick up on the sarcasm.

The tougher the economy, the more interesting AT&T gets.

It also depends on the job. For IT and Computer science? I'd imagine Google, Apple, Intel, Meta, X, etc. Are more appealing.

For finance and financial analysis? Most likely any of the top 50 financial firms or banks.

For Sales? Looking at the top 10 companies AT&T is rather appealing.

For Network Engineering? AT&T

In general, having a company like AT&T on your resume looks great. Especially to smaller businesses. I know countless people who've worked at AT&T then gone to Samsung, Google, and Apple.

Likewise, I'm fairly young (below 30) and get job offers pretty much twice a week from other companies due to sales experience and performance.
