There were plenty of "whistleblowers", including John Malone laying out the problem at an exec meeting, with pretty color charts. Did you read the articles?

And not knowing lead was a problem? Are you mad? The freaking Roman Empire knew lead exposure was a problem. Slightly more recently, did you not grow up watching the "pica balloon" commercials encouraging children to not eat paint chips? Lead paint in homes was banned in 1972.

They've had more than a bit of time to recognize this issue and plan for it, and that includes the current occupant of the big chair.

It's not the CEO's fault. He's not going to publicize anything negative about the company. It's the employees fault. Why? Because no one got the guts to be a whistleblower many years ago when the cables were actually being installed or even a few years after they were installed that there was lead in them. It's only becoming a major issue now because many people are actually concerned about lead poisoning and many studies have been done on how harmful it can be. I'm sure when the cables were being made and installed, not many people knew about the danger of lead or were there enough scientific studies done to prove (or get attention) to how harmful it can be. If the media had made a stink about it decades ago then it would have gotten more attention but they didn't. It's only today when WSJ published an article due to all the studies backing the danger of lead have we become so concerned about it. Going forward in the future, we are going to hear about many such issues as the science gets better and better (but it all depends on our kids who will hopefully study more math and science instead of video games, otherwise we will have to depend on the study result from China or Russia or others who will be more scientifically advanced).
