Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

LR'd Six Years Ago: Rejoice Every Day

Ah, another Layoff. If you are affected; just accept it and move on.

You were smart enough to get hired here.

You will be hired somewhere else.

Dependent on how invested with time and lifestyle with working at Cisco; it may be a big emotionally painful adjustment.

Growth and change IS painful. Embrace the change. Be proud you lasted this long.

It's just business.

There will be lots more tough changes in this life; so this is just hopefully one more in a series of many more, for a long life.

For a long life, one must navigate change at all times, and distance yourself from wallowing through self pity. Crud happens. Last time, it was my turn. This time it is yours.

Embrace it. The LR was the best lesson I learned from Cisco. It opened many new doors. It mostly taught me not too take a career too seriously. If you are taking it too seriously, maybe time to scale back. Stop chasing money, if that is one of your primary drivers.

Maybe it will be yours too.

Bro have you ever worked retail? It’s not a fun little part time retirement gig. That’s major escapist fantasy.

Based on the down votes, TIL Cisco employees aspire to entry level retail jobs.

To the person who said he enjoyed seeing a former employee working at Home Depot selling paint. Maybe that individual wanted and enjoyed working there after getting out of the rat race? Maybe that individual wasn't cut out for Cisco and found a job that better suited him/her. Maybe he/she retired and it's a little extra income for little effort? Maybe you are young and you are the one who needs to keep working while they don't have to? Maybe they did in fact take a huge pay cut and are hurting financially You never know what another person's position in life is. Let's be kind to each other

I can’t wait to pontificate on leaving the Cisco LR treadmill. Im looking forward to see what’s next. A former Cisco co-worker went to a well known company last year and when she was leaving people asked her how often the new company has layoffs. She laughed and said they don’t. That’s how conditioned we are for this. We expect it to be this way everywhere. But it’s not. I’ll be reporting back what I find out. Good luck everyone!

The 100k jobs cut at tech companies weren’t technical people. Mostly recruiters etc. It’s still easy for technical people to find roles, just not always fully remote any more.

Stop chasing money, if that is one of your primary drivers.

The sacrifices aren't for everyone but for me banking skills (I was never good at schmoozing so I had to do it the hard way) and income and doing job jumps to increase both meant I could retire early and now I don't live at the whim of people who neither know nor care about me.

If you are taking it too seriously, maybe time to scale back.

When I doubt my decisions I go to the Home Depot to see a particular ex-tech person selling paint.

Cisco is like a cult and indoctrinates most to the point of feeling it is a privilege to work there.

Perspective comes from diverse experiences. How many people get to work at companies that can release generation after generation after generation of products on time and on budget with actual quality? If you haven't seen this (and most haven't) you just write everything off as "this is just the way it is everywhere."

You think it's that easy in this job market? Over 100K IT workers have been cut this year and the vacancies aren't there, unless you have a specialty that's hard to find. Check the jobs on linked in and others, within minutes they have 100 applicants, 400 by the end of the week.

Your words will ring hollow to many. Cisco is like a cult and indoctrinates most to the point of feeling it is a privilege to work there. Once you constantly hear “Best Place to Work” over and over, you start to believe it. They know what they are doing with that. They also know what they are doing with getting celebrities on check ins and so forth.

Now I would never say Cisco is the all time worst place to work. What I’m saying is that they use sneaky tactics and borderline bribes to keep people from jumping ship. They hope the bribes will offset the constant worry of being laid off. Most drink the kool-aid and I was somewhat in that boat at one point.

The only advice I have for those still drinking the kool-aid is get out while you can. No, don’t just quit. But I would be networking with others and passively looking for other jobs.
