Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

If you plan on leaving the company ..

I think this is a very important point for those considering leaving the company and not coming back .. use all your unused vacation time before giving notice of your immediate resignation. Let's be honest, this company is on life support and likely won't be around much longer as it is. Even better if you have a job lined up already.

Want my severance. Also, any earned unused vacation time at time of termination will be paid out for management. Save your vacation if you are leaving before year end

It is in the cwa contract what you should do.

It's stealing to use vacation well beyond what is earned during the course of the year. This is bad advice.

"Managers accrue PTO as the year progresses. Any PTO used before accrual will be deducted from the final paycheck. This policy came into effect a few years ago."

Managers accrue PTO days as the year progresses, this is true. Any unused vacation days earned will be included in your final paycheck, but if you used more than you earned, then it depends on timing and your intent.

Example: if you used all your vacation and kept working in good faith, then you get laid off or quit months later, mostly likely you will be fine. But if you inform your supervisor that you are quitting, and then try to take a full years vacation time, even time you haven't earned yet, then that's a no-go.

"No one will quit. "

This isn't true... at least in my group. We are seeing people leave. It's the first time that I've been at T where I have seen so much voluntary attrition. Mostly younger people not impacted by pensions, etc. They are finding jobs that they view as better opportunities. And in all but one, the jobs are 100% remote. How ironic is that? Another irony is that these folks who have found remote jobs already live near the hubs. I do realize that there is a big push for RTO everywhere, and my group isn't huge so the sample size is small, but there are still jobs out there, and remote ones at that.

They are still paying an $8b dividend that and the free cash flow has to go first.

As all current management knows from all the recent changes in policy the last couple years, nothing is guaranteed. I’m staying for the severance and retire if selected but will work longer if possible, not ready to quit working. As stated by others, each has to evaluate their own situation. One size doesn’t fit all.

My plan is to do more charitable work and volunteering at my local church after AT&T retirement. Life is a journey and AT&T is just a piece of mine. Good luck and prayers for all! One door shuts another opportunity will open.

I’m with OP. Count me as someone trying to leave asap. I’m not shortsighted enough to stay for, yes a significant sum, at the risk of losing a good job opportunity that will allow me to continue paying bills for years and years vs just one more year. I should have left a year ago when jobs were plentiful. No severance then. No loss.
I don’t want Stankey to win but if you’re suffering and staying because you feel ENTITLED to the severance, you have a whole host of other future job problems ahead. If you’re not suffering, by all means, stay to the end.

No one will quit. Recession is on it's way. End of 2023 and into 2024 is when unemployment will increase drastically. Regional banks are going to be in trouble with Commercial Real Estate loans. It is estimated that $1.5 Trillion dollars in loans are due starting this year until 2025. Life is about to get a little more bumpier. Many company earning and guidance for Q3 and Q4 are going to be bad. Geopolitical issues is causing world division. China and Russia are have more military drills. Saudi's and Iran have joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. And AI is going to take over many jobs. Before you know it, All of America will be on strike. Ford/GM/STLA have their contracts due in Sept. UPS may go on strike. And people are more isolated then ever since we are all working from home. Before we could at least have group lunch in cafeteria and talk about sports, vacations, politics, gas prices, rumors, weather, etc. Now we are getting input from the internet but the output (from ourselves) to share our thoughts has decreased drastically.

@zwc+1nD4p55j each employee has his or her own financial circumstances to consider. T is running a real risk of becoming insolvent even prior to this lead cable issue. There is no guarantee an employee will be surplussed and no guarantee of a severance payment.
