Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Any info about 2023 performance metrics?

I looked and don't even see a plan for this year, hence no results to see how we're doing towards bonus for 2023. It seems odd they would be reassuring WS about performance goals but saying nothing internally. Almost like they may be hiding something from us.

This alone should be a red flag for investors.

@1rqm+1nANDz5x Haha. Long explanation, but I agree. Anybody who counts on that bonus every year may have problems since you don't know if it's going to be 5k or 10k, etc. And you'd be totally screwed if you get re-org'ed into a group with a worse ratio. Had that happen; it su-ked.

If I go to get a loan, I can use last year's totals from the W-2, but if they ask for current salary, I can only use the base amount, which of course is lower.

"essentially part of salary"

Yes, bonus is part of total compensation package, but the person before said base salary. Meaning, they can never pay you below that, and it is the number on which your raise is calculated is base salary. Gross salary would include bonus and any merit awards. Over the years, bonus has been called "at risk" pay, Company Performance Incentive, and now is called Success Bonus. They changed it from "at risk" to incentive years back when it implied it was something to be lost instead of something to be gained. But if the company doesn't pay a bonus one year, you are not making anything less than you have been promised.

"Total compensation package" includes base salary, bonus/at risk salary, merit awards, and other non-cash incentives (like the points for the health program that you could spen on gift cards). "Total rewards" package includes the cash and non-cash amount, health benefits, and retirement contributions. These are all the terms used in the "Your Rewards" statement you get each year when we get covered on new salary each year.

Considering how I have always heard that the bonus was all inclusive of your total rewards it was essentially part of salary. Employees who have received a bonus each year know this...

Otherwise our peers at other companies would be making considerably more than us. It was always expected that it was part of your annual salary; even if they only paid 80%, you still got most of that mark and chances are it would be made up for the following year.

If they move to not paying bonuses as part of an expected salary, I think that would certainly drive more talent away to the competition. They will save on bonuses, but lose out long term. Myopic thinking...

I think most would be willing to forgo a bonus to keep a job or not be asked to move to keep a job. Honestly, it doesn't affect base salary, so it's all gravy to me.

Chad Townes said yesterday there are targets for bonus this year. No one has seen them.

"Not sure if OP is trying to get a rise out of everyone or being honest. Maybe both."

I think it's a fair observation since the lack of information shows the culture shift within the company. The quarterly metrics were were a way of giving employees something to work towards and allowing them to know where they stand throughout the year. It's also worth noting it has long been a big part of overall compensation, without it many people will be taking a 10-20 percent pay hit. The fact they are no longer mentioning this is a little odd.

Not sure if OP is trying to get a rise out of everyone or being honest. Maybe both. Even the Sales quotas for fiber connections bear no reality to the conditions in place today. The deals being made are stingy, and focus on circuits within the fiber footprint. Whole swaths of business is going to be lost over the next few years as the belt tightening happens across the board. So, while new connections may be brought online, previous contracts where you won the entirety of the network business will now suffer from loss and erosion as T decides to play hardball with circuits that are outside of territory, with cable companies standing ready to eat up those circuits and existing infrastructure in place. Bring on other services like Starlink and Mobility will take it in the shorts as well. Everyone knows this, the Street knows it, but no one here talks about it. You worry about the microcosm of your job as a cook in the kitchen on the boat, when the whole ship is sinking.
