Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

My wife is sick, disabled, and I’m looking forward to hybrid RTO

because it actually keeps my mind off of being a caregiver. It appears this is what retirement in a few years is going to look like and we’ll figure out how to manage. When you think of forced relocation consider a person in my position. Getting our home ready to sell, finding a new place that accommodates her needs, the cost without assistance, all of this makes a move at best unattractive and at worst purely impractical. Perhaps I’m the poster child for the 10% who might get a virtual position, but it feels that you have to swallow your pride to even ask. Or to put it another way, disability shaming. It has been a good run over many decades and lord willing I have some time left to continue contributing.

"I’m a remote worker and put my kids in daycare when they were little as it’s impossible to work effectively and care for toddlers at the same time."

In your case, I'm sure your kids are far better off from having had less exposure to you. The daycare people likely raised them to be actual humans.

“I’m a remote worker and put my kids in daycare”
“or in your case, general family care.”
“I hate that others have ruined this.”

How do you know the OP doesn’t have home care already? OP even said they are looking forward to RTO. This isn’t a case of other people ruining WFH. If it were you could have gone to the office after dropping kids at daycare.

Nobody ruined anything. Clearly WFH works. This current exercise has everything to do cost cutting measurements needed to deliver $16B free cash flow before the end of the year. Designating someone’s work location across the damn country is more than a simple RTO. The goal here is massive headcount reduction.

“Remote/WFH shouldn’t be one in which you’re also in a caretaker role.”

So true. This was such an abused policy

“Remote/WFH shouldn’t be one in which you’re also in a caretaker role. That’s largely why we’re all being told it’s over.”

Reading comprehension. OP is fine with RTO but not moving to DFW.

Remote/WFH shouldn’t be one in which you’re also in a caretaker role. That’s largely why we’re all being told it’s over. Too many people using remote work as childcare or in your case, general family care. Hire a nurse.

For context... (because this information was shared internally with Warner Media only) ... David Zaslav runs a tight office culture ship at Discovery because he hates his wife and uses the office as a form of escapism. His believe is that he enjoys it, therefore everyone probably enjoys it.

Is that you David Zaslav?

They want healthy hip collaborators that look good on a photo opp, not old broken down losers with work excuses.

I got a good excuse too. I just don't want to go.

Apply for a job accommodation. Can't hurt to try.

I feel for you and wish you the best outcome.

That said, the leadership does not give a flying flip about your situation.

If you’ve been here “many decades” I’m sure you understand they want employees of your vintage (read: cost) gone.

I respect your attitude. While decisions about relo and virtual options are based solely on position, I hope things work out for you. Wish you the best!
