Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Benefits of RTO

Jen Robertson told us one of the benefits of RTO was that 2 programmers who do nothing in common can go to lunch and connect. She got what she asked for yesterday. A few peep I haven't seen in ages showed up yesterday and we went to lunch. Result: 1.5 hours × 4 people = 6 hours less work got done yesterday.

I don't mind RTO, I go in every day by choice, or did before RTO, now im only going in 3 days a week. I just want a place to go without a forced relo.

I have two collaboration lunches today. One at 11 and the second at 1. This collaboration is better than work.

Our group was asked to start RTO in March. I had been remote for 10+ years so It was rough at first but I like it now. I leave my house at 7:30am, listen to Stern driving in, and usually arrive at 9-9:30. I spend 20 minutes configuring my work station for the day so everything’s working. I’m always in a difficult spot each day and the equipment never seems to work. Always missing cables, monitors purposely sabotaged, missing parts, etc… Then I work until 11am and go to lunch, which is usually running errands, then back to the sweat shop environment until 3:30. I then get home around 5. My productivity has gone from truly working 60 hours a week remotely down to maybe 30. Ironically enough, I’m working much less now and my stress is lower. I don’t take calls in the morning driving in, and none driving home. By the time I get home I’m in a great mood from listening to Stern or another comedy channel. Life is good now

Was it a red swingline stapler? Is your name Milton?

Yep. Will meet lots of people when RTO occurs. Will waste time chatting in the halls. We will talk kids, spouses, politics, TV shows. We will collaborate on how this company stinks, how mgt decisions are poor, how Stank and Steph have sold the company down the river. About the only thing we will do is talk about work since it is so depressing

“ For those not taking a lunch while working from home it's just another way of you falling into the trap of AT&T wanting to you to lead an unhealthy lifestyle to put in 60 hour work weeks ”

Nope. I am off work by 330 every day. No 60 hour weeks for me. Company does not own me.

For those not taking a lunch while working from home it's just another way of you falling into the trap of AT&T wanting to you to lead an unhealthy lifestyle to put in 60 hour work weeks only so you can be shoved out the door earlier than you wanted. Congrats for letting them use you like this and just realize their ultimate goal is they just want you to drop dead if you that's possible. You've been sold a bill of lies for the last decade or so and you're just too stupid to even realize it.

Hard to do an in-person collaboration when your hub is Atlanta and your team is in Dallas ...

Hard to collaborate when you can’t understand most of the people around you.

“No collaborating no lunch with a bunch of people it have nothing to do with my job.”

You need to spend time reviewing the goals of collaboration.

“ Do you not take a lunch while wfh ?”
No I don’t. Days I’m in the office I do, I use a lunch to go run whatever errands I need to take care of. No collaborating no lunch with a bunch of people it have nothing to do with my job. But less productivity because I’m in the office.

"Do you not take lunch while wfh?"

I eat lunch at my desk while working. Have for years. 60 hour work weeks don't leave time for frivolous activities like a lunch break.

I love our leadership and smile during my commute since I may be inspired by a town hall or motivation email when I arrive! My favorite part of RTO is the useless emails of contractors asking me to help them replace myself.

“I disappear every Friday for a few hours for collab lunches.”

In other words, just like the days you WFH.

RTO= going back to normal. It’s in the name. Nothing you can do about it anyway

More extended lunches with a couple of beers on company time is definitely a benefit to whatever this “collaboration” thing is.

I disappear every Friday for a few hours for collab lunches. I’ve been doing it since the pre-Covid original hub consolidation. It’s what they want. Who am I to argue.

I wish they would stop saying that RTO is a culture move and put it for what it really is
