The company began backfilling this job with contractors as people retired. A few weeks ago they gave those contractors their 2 week notice. Is the reason being that there's a massive layoff coming for those in that job title (next week?) and this is the company's way of getting around the union contact or is there another possible scenario I'm missing? I'm sure the company will bring the contractors back in afterwards....

They are not letting go of contractor/Non-Payroll workers in our org and it’s going to backfire after the next layoff when people realize the contractors on site with them get to stay while they go…
We lose about a 1/3rd of our circuit packs that should be delivered to the Central Office. Some cost $150 some cost $7000. I don't care.
I've seen many times a $800 van roll up with a magnet "FEDEX Contractor" sign on the door and the "employee" throwing packages at one of our doors. That is if I am there at the time.
Many times I've pulled into a Central office parking lot and seen white envelopes that contain our plugs with tire tracks across them laying on the pavement, and clearly rain soaked and thought, well that sucks.
They contracted with Amazon to do all future deliveries.

My group is made up of SouthWest region Comm Techs and we have quite a few contractors working side by side with us doing the same job.
( Yes, apparently it's allowed. Aren't Unions awesome ? :| )
Anyway, it came with a condition.
No one from my group can be surplussed unless the contractors are let go first.
( Of course the contractors can be let go at any moment without warning )
So, I will assume the conditions are similar for the Supplies Attendant positions as well.
If they're letting the contractors go, that should be a big red flag of what's coming.

Yes. I was one of those Material service coordinators MSC’s that scrambled to find another position. It was a blessing for me but several went off payroll with a 30+ year severance check and several would have rather stayed on in another position but did not. Contractors were brought in and the merry go round of hiring training quitting firing hiring training has been going on ever since. I’ve talked to several people who would love to have the MSC’s back but in all fairness some of them are doing a bang up job.
They laid off all of our store room employees in one sweep a few years back in the D3, and yes all we have now a contractors.
