Just received an attached email pdf from HR with my relocation letter. Have 2 weeks to accept severance and be off payroll first week of July or commit to move to Dallas by 31 Dec. no relocation assistance. Debating on retiring and calling it a day.

Your commute times to downtown dallas are really going to suck when you buy the over inflated house 40+ miles away in the suburbs, cause anything else closer is pure cr-p and even more expensive
Do you also have to re-apply for your job?
"People, don't move to Dallas! I was just there, Texas freeways have become just like Los Angeles freeways..."
Man you are not kidding. I have been here forever and it has gotten BAD! The traffic is the worst I have ever seen it and adds significant commute time and risk. The toll lanes help, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg...
People, don't move to Dallas! I was just there, Texas freeways have become just like Los Angeles freeways, congested and too over crowded! Commute times are long, agonizing and infuriating! They put you in a very bad mood every day! The daily commute is bad for your health! Don't do it!
Hi. Does the letter mention if severance requires release of claims against the employer? Thx
Don't listen to the negative nellies here. Accept the offer, uproot your family, sell your house in a down market and get another for double the mortgage interest, move to Dallas, and end up getting laid off in December, only to find you now live in a state which doesn't take care of people who need it.
It's a perfect plan.
Play the game and delay till end of year and find a new job. Just know after the initial 2 week time frame there is no severance. You could find a job outside AT&T in 6 weeks and they want you start right away not wait till Jan,1.
Then you missed out on an additional 6 months pay (severance ) on top of your new job’s salary.
They gonna cover that high interest rate you'll need to pay when you buy a new house? Betting your current mortgage isn't 7% (or higher)
@1fqa+1n0dvmbH - I agree with you maximize the money making aspect and heck with what’s best for the company. The only downside is no unemployment insurance but should make that up with matched 401k, bonus and etc… like @1fqa+1n0dvmbH stated.
No, that actually makes sense in many ways. I admit, when considering severance vs 6 more months of work, I only looked at salary and time, not other benefits, so in many ways, it may be beneficial to stick around. I'm sure as many of us here, I haven't applied for a new job in so many years, I have no idea how long it even takes to find a good one anymore. A friend of mine was looking for a decent remote job for about 2 months, a year ago. He had interviews almost every day, but it took a while before he actually got a good offer. One line of thinking is if I take the severance, and get a new job within 2-3 months, I will come out ahead with some money left, vs the same situation but on payroll, and if I leave in 2 months, that will be the end of it. Replacing a paycheck and benefits from AT&T with a paycheck and benefits from somewhere else. But still have insurance, just in case, and get some more money put into 401K and HSA. On the other hand, leaving now will give me plenty of free time to search for that new job without interruptions. Maybe even take a short break before jumping into it. Definitely something to think about some more.
Better take severance and leave as they won’t offer severance in January and fire. Take money and look for a better opportunity and you will find something better in max 2-3 months.
“Actively seek work elsewhere, take vacation/sick/personal days and maybe when you tell them you’ve had no luck selling your home and relocating in Dec they’ll keep extending it if you don’t leave on your own.”
Please tell me you aren’t a manager.
Might be better to stay thru December while looking for another job. 6 months of paychecks, 401k match, pension contributions, insurance, HSA contributions and most of the ‘23 bonus (if there is one)
Actively seek work elsewhere, take vacation/sick/personal days and maybe when you tell them you’ve had no luck selling your home and relocating in Dec they’ll keep extending it if you don’t leave on your own.
Stranger things have happened.
You have no obligation to make this easy for anyone else except yourself.
No previous communication from anyone specific to your situation prior to that email?
There is life after AT&T!
Your going to hate yourself if you come to Dallas
- what’s wrong with Dallas?
Your going to hate yourself if you come to Dallas
10% reject? I'd be shocked it more than 10% accept it.
If 10% of all the relocating workers reject the move this will be at least 6000 employees voluntarily leave the company
T is evil 👿

I see no attached letter???
"6 monthly installments"
I don't believe this. There is a published Severance Plan and the plan says that severance is delivered in a lump sum within 45 days. It wouldn't change unless the plan changes. I don't know if this was the OP or not- but given that there were very few details, I am suspicious of this entire post. I hope that anybody posting about letters will provide details to at least attest to some level of credibility.
“ lWhat happens if you say you’re going to move to keep collecting your checks then get a new job by then and just quit?”
You would end up being a bonus cut. You would quit with no severance paid out. Just don’t hit the final “move by” date or you’ll be fired.
Why would you take the severance? Even if you have enough years for it to be 6 months' pay, you'll be foregoing pension contribution and 401k match. It's not a wash.
You're actually getting cheated if you take the severance, unless of course you already have something else lined up.
Don't do them a favor. Lie and leave when you feel like it.
I really thought they would be smarter than this.
What happens if you say you’re going to move to keep collecting your checks then get a new job by then and just quit?
I’d take it.
I really feel for management personnel having to make the decision of a lifetime! It would be great if you had to decide to move for another company for a new job with more money!
"6 monthly installments."
Is this OP replying, or one of those "there will be no severance" negative Nancies that now has to move a goal post?
I guess at the end of the day, it makes no difference to me if it's all at once, or over 6 months. Just curious.
“ I assume the severance is a lump sum payment within 45 days, per the policy, right?”
6 monthly installments.
"Congratulations! You have the choice to continue in your position. The ball ia now in your court."
Meh. Technically it's a choice, but is it, really?
So it has begun.
Thank you for sharing. Pretty much in line with what most of us were expecting. So sounds like 2 weeks to decide, and then 2 more weeks on payroll if not moving. Were there any other items of interest? I assume the severance is a lump sum payment within 45 days, per the policy, right?
What organization?
Congratulations! You have the choice to continue in your position. The ball ia now in your court.
