Was notified today to move to Austin from San Ramon, I can’t move for family reasons, and officially rejected the notification, what should i do?

@1icb+1n0dN20a , you do realize that Austin is basically a slice of California stuck in the middle of the hellscape of magastan Texas, right?
Be extremely grateful that they are sending you to Austin - a city of culture, vibrant life, and inclusion, and not some spithole like Dallas.
Still, Texas is a horrible place to end up if you get laid off. And you will be laid off. Probably six months after turning your life completely upside down.
You are so lucky. Austin is an amazing place to live. Beats the he-l out of Newsom's he-l hole. And you will report to an office that is cutting edge. Take the deal. Life is about doing the things that allow you to look back and say, "I have no regrets."
If you walk out now, you'll always wonder, "what would have happened if I'd taken that offer? How would my life have turned out."
Also, be sure you get the executive relocation package incentive $$. If they can't do that, ask for a $10,000 SPEAR payment to help with moving expenses.
I’ve lived in Austin for more than a decade and property and apts are in short supply, but should be relatively affordable coming from San Ramon. Austin is in salary band 2, but probably should be a 3 these days. Politically it leans left, but towards the right on the north and west side. Find a house close to the office. Horrible traffic getting to the Arboretum office from south of the river.

I received the same notification on Monday as well from my manager I have two weeks to answer with yes or no, I didn’t answer yet.

I asked my manager what is next? She told me she doesn’t know what’s happens next, she accepted the move as well.
It is like running a scam and expecting people to reject

He shared the letter which give me to sept 4th to report to Austin and I have two weeks to response officially with yes or know, the letter was not detailed just the address and date and steps
No mention of relocation expenses or change in pay
living wage for Austin is more like 140k these days. Even with that, you will find sub standard cr-p real estate selling for 500k even if you can find it. It's turned into a real sh-t hole, but apparently looks good to people from the bay area since they are so good at crapping things up themselves and trying to make themselves feel right at home.
i dont agree with the liberal views of california but california is above and beyond the place to live when you compare it to texas.
Living wage for Austin last year was $74,000 last year and continues to rise. Good luck.

Austin Tx was great in the 80’s 90’s but it’s like the heart of California in Tx now

Unless you are rooted in CA, I would consider getting out of the state, not because of the RTO issue, but I can see things in the bay area to degrade significantly within the next year. Folks I know in the tech industry were victims of mass layoffs. Most folks left CA entirely due to the craziness going in the cities, the exodus of tech companies, and much lower cost of living in other states.

I don't recall Austin being one of the hubs.
Wish you the best...putting family ahead of T shows your smarts and that you have your priorities in order...at one level things are a wash...1) you could accept severance payout or 2) say you'll move but don't --- you'd still be getting your check, medical etc for 6-7 months (Dec 31) while you look full-time for a new job in CA. Will probbaly be able to collect unemployment as well.

I have exited many people and never heard of HR doing it. Your boss gives you the exit docs to sign and goes over the checklist with you. No need for a video call.

I sent the response to my manager only and he is fast to share it with the HR, he didn’t even bother to talk to me about it or convince me otherwise

I would go to Austin
It is a nice place and has good schools and definitely more affordable than San Ramon
The list of hub places are changing but the bottom line is California is not a preferred place for a hub location for AT&T, the protection and labor laws make it unfriendly place for T
Housing in Austin is ridiculously expensive, too expensive for an ATT employee to afford unless you're earning $125k/yr! I was there last summer, the expressways are just like L.A, congested and it takes forever to get any place! Also, it's ungodly, awful hot in the summer at least it was last summer! I would not want to relocate to Austin, at least for this company!
Austin will continue to a lab for some time if you are truly interested.
You will love Austin it's the closest to CA you are going to get with TX with a free spirit local culture and environment. Have a cold bud light and there are Targets all over Austin to shop just load up the Tesla and head to Texas.
