Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Time To Unionize?

Laid off, Forced RTO/attrition? Maybe it’s time to use the time we have left to give Wayne the gift that keeps on giving… an employee union. Maybe it’s time to turn the Wayne’s anti-worker sentiment into Wayne’s fast track departure. Wayne takes 150+% pay increase while we have our bonus structure cut and are lucky to get a 3% pay increase. With current inflation rates, even with a 3% performance bonus, we’re making less than we did a year ago and now he wants us to spend more time and money so we can sit in a chair and have zoom meetings with coworkers in other states. Wayne is surrounded by failed leaders from failed big banks and believes that because our offices are in right to work states, that he can sc--w us without lube and there’s nothing we can do… and maybe he’s right… but maybe a unionized workforce would change his mind.

What are your thoughts? Pro or anti union? Why? And how many are planning to abide by the masters wishes and show up looking like you’re playing in the band while the ship slowly sinks.

As pro-union as I am in principle, I just don't see it happening at USAA. The level of coordination and effort required to make it happen is simply too high, and I don't see anyone taking up the helm to make it happen.

The company can't fire you for attempting to unionize, but they can certainly put you on a corrective action and terminate you because you were late, you didn't sell enough, your file didn't meet QA standards, etc.

I'm all for shaking things up and doing what it takes to get Wayne gone, I just don't foresee a union in USAA's future. I hope I'm wrong though.

I am ready to unionize. We are way past the point to stave off the high level corporate bullsh-t. Let’s get this going.

The MCO's are required to report any sign of possible union talk.

Perfect way to start the process would be to get email of every adjuster per say and send a mass email and organize a meeting.

See if people are actually serious. Back take note you'll have a target on you from that point on.

I don't know which union people are contacting for possible representation. But may I make a suggestion? Even though you are not truckers, etc., get the Teamsters. They represent multiple types of employees. And, note this: If there's ever a picket line by Teamsters, other Teamsters won't cross it. This means no UPS deliveries as well as countless others. Plus a truck driver may come picket with you and throw a brick through a scab's car window.

A union? If you don't like it go find a different employer. That's what I did. USAA is a shell of itself. It's time to move on..

Here's what may happen if USAA employees unionize: The company will downsize or even close the location where it happens, and farm even more jobs out to the losers at Sitel, Teletech and Teleperformance. And if they do that, they deserve what they get, since there were millions (allegedly) stolen from USAA by Teleperformance agents.

What is so strange is that they have about 75 open positions!!!!!!

Agreed. A coordinated walkout/refusal to come into office could make a big difference. But organizing that is probably both harder and riskier than unionizing. Nonetheless, if enough people simultaneously refuse to comply, they wouldn't be able to fire everyone for it. Worth considering. Maybe everyone can get sick September 4th. Other more peaceful forms of resistance could be things like, everyone goes into the office and spends all day clogging up the hallway talking to each other..."watercooler conversations" that make RTO so valuable :)

What EMG does t want people to know is that regardless of layoffs and RTO attrition, this company is drastically short staffed for the work they are trying to accomplish with all the compliance and mod efforts. If there was even a work stoppage of 25% of the work force it would debilitating. Especially in claims. With all of the regulatory issues and consent orders the fed would probably be forced into the situation as well.

The board is a bunch of gray haired boomers. Of course they are going to agree everyone should be in the office, because they have antiquated views based on their time in corporate America in the 1980s and 1990s! (Exaggeration but you get the point). We should be tailoring our policies based on the current and upcoming generation of workers rather than those that have been retired for quite some time. We will never attract top talent fresh out of college with these outdated mindsets.

I like unions but realize they are no silver bullet to fix return to office. First, you assume the board doesn't support return to office; I imagine they do. And even if you get a union approved (a longish process), then negotiations begin. If management says no, are people willing to go on strike with zero pay for an extended period of time? And if by some miracle the company agrees to work from home but in return decided to only give bonuses to those in the office, will people be ok with that? Strike over that? https://www.businessinsider.com/company-cutting-bonuses-of-remote-workers-return-to-office-policy-2023-4

At the bare minimum heavy traction related to union organization could force the boards hand to remove Wayne.

I think we could form a union that is specifically oriented around demanding WFH. Those who form the union have a say in what the union is about. If it's focused on working from home, I think a lot of people could get behind it. The main obstacle in my opinion is getting the word out to people you trust in a group small enough to realistically get that 30%. A lot of people would be afraid to partake even if they want to.

I was never a fan of unions, but after what has been happening, I think the time has come to explore that option.

Don’t think it will happen but would love to have the board hear these rumors. Might be the quickest way to have them remove Wayne.

You don't need 30% of all employees to agree:

"The petition must show that it has
the support of at least 30% of employees in an appropriate unit. An appropriate unit is a group of workers who are logically placed together and share common employment interests for purposes of union representation."

I'm not sure yet but I'm going to check with my NLRB soon to see if a team of 10-40 people counts as an "appropriate unit". In that case you would only need 3-12 people onboard to legally require the company to recognize you after going through the process via the NLRB.

LOL - good luck with that. You'll never get 30% to agree. Especially across all campuses.

To start the process, you must file an election petition with your local NLRB office. Along with the petition, you will need to show that at least 30% of the employees support your election petition, which is usually done with authorization cards or a petition signed by your co-workers.
