I mean, just because you have a house, a family with kids in schools, and an entire life centered in, say Denver doesn't mean you can't swallow your dignity, pull on your forelock, and report to your newly designated hub in Atlanta where you will work via phone and Teams with your colleagues in Dallas and LA.

Just pull up roots, sell your house, buy a new home, enroll your kids into new schools, and settle into your new location only to get your layoff notice three months after you've made the move.

It's so easy! I don't understand why some people are so selfish they can't see that completely destroy their lives for the sake of a company demanding they relocate so they can then be central in their remote collaborations.

Hey, Goober -- good people with 20+ years of dedication and loyalty have been let go in every past layoff of every past quarter going back at least 10 years, and likely more.

@ggs+1mTZhIKZ Do you realize that unemployment is still below 4% (it was 3.4% in April), and inflation is now at around 5% and continuing to drop.

The economy is actually in good shape, even though companies like twitter are still in full panic mode. The punchline is that T's layoffs are never the result of any external factors, like inflation or unemployment, but entirely because of executive incompetence and mismanagement.

So, the OP says that this layoff is different because "GOOD" people are being hit. The implication being that all of the many (many, many, man, many, many) past layoffs only targeted sub-standard employees.

Excuse me for saying this, but OP is a complete and total a$$h0le. "GOOD" people were let go in every previous round. "GOOD" people were never protected. "GOOD" people were never spared. I've seen multiple "GOOD" people get the axe over the past 7 years for no reason other than someone had to go, and it was their turn. Whether it was because the group in which they worked was targeted, or their location, or just the fact that some sleazebag L4 had to hit their numbers.

Being a standout employee doesn't matter because it's always just been a roll of the dice, and if it was your turn, it was your turn -- regardless of how "GOOD" you were

A bit hard to plan for this when your place of employment suddenly and unexpectedly changes to the other side of the country, no?

Everyone should have been preparing for a day like this 10 surpluses ago.

The company intends to fire thousands for failure to comply with RTO and expects thousands more to quit for the same reasons. Most will get nothing but a fired-for-cause letter.

There is a simple remedy for this. Return to the office. Nobody should be in a position of not being able to report to their place of employment. Crazy to word this in such a way that T bad for letting you go because you did not report to your place of employment.

It is a tough market, and the economy is not in its best shape, many families will be impacted and many will struggle for a long time.

It's a good idea to prepare now for the inevitable layoff - whether you are a top performer or not....this is all about cost cutting. I've seen a lot of product managers and sales folks in Wieboldt / Hussain orgs laid off....the good news is that most are re-employed at companies where there is growth and strong leadership. Most are making 10%-20% more as well. Leverage your experiences, your network and soon you will be far better off.
Prepare, be diligent and best of luck. You will look back and be glad you changed companies. AT&T used to be a great company but it seems for the past few years everyone is looking over their shoulder. Sad how fsr thsi company has fallen. Is it really all that different, though? I've seen many good people with 15, 20, 25+ years laid off over the years. In fact, it feels like those are usually the ones targeted first.
