Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Will there even be enough room or adequate desk space

At these Hub locations for people to do work and conduct business? The Collaboration Zone in Atlanta for its brief time was more like an open air flea market with lots of traffic, people coming and going, noise, and dirty. I am planning on it being far worse and not being able to find a suitable working space on a consistent basis.

"Which is, all in the office by 9/5 of this year, 3+ days a week.

this is also not 100% true. It was clearly stated there will still be virtual workers. Yes, about 10% when it is all said and done, but it is reasonable to expect there could be more os office space constraints are resolved."

No, it is true. Santa's list is being made up and checked twice, and there ain't any 10% virtuals on it. Not even close.

" Most will hold out on a reservation in hopes of no available seats..."

Hadn't thought about it, but this is spot on.

And this will require rules and more coaching around whatever those rules are. (You must try and sign up for work space at least a week or more before...etc etc.) Such a valuable use of those with direct reports time.

, if you want everyone in the office then you ought to make sure you have a seat for every single person, every day, or don’t roll out such a policy.

  • everyone is not required to be in the office everyday. The policy clearly states otherwise.

really? Well who decides that? Who decides who gets to be virtual and who gets to continue to struggle with trying to even reserve a seat on a daily basis? I’m sure that will be a fair and equitable process that everyone will be happy with.

  • plan to reserve your seat for a range of days in advance, not daily. Most will hold out on a reservation in hopes of no available seats. Oh, virtual designation will be equitable. The companies ongoing commitment to DEI will dictate the the underrepresented population will get to be virtual. Not sure it is true, I heard many were hired to meet a number and are not necessarily qualified therefore they don't have much to offer in a collaborative environment.

Now I have to take notes every morning/ week detailing who tried to get in but couldn’t? And then the feedback will be “well, why didn’t they try to go in on this day, when there WERE seats available..?. And we feel that this type of thing is a good use of a. technical managers time?

  • I agree, the policy seems like an admistrive nightmare but the note taking will not be required. Initially leadership expects some level of chaos but once the ratio of people located in a city versus the available seats gets worked out they expect to have to tweak things which may include changing the number of in office says.

“ No seat, no need to go to the office. For those locations with a deficit they will designate the appropriate number of people as virtual“

Can you imagine the admin nightmare for the poor slobs with direct reports just trying to comply with this doomed to fail policy? Now I have to take notes every morning/ week detailing who tried to get in but couldn’t? And then the feedback will be “well, why didn’t they try to go in on this day, when there WERE seats available..?. And we feel that this type of thing is a good use of a. technical managers time? Put your money where your mouth is, if you want everyone in the office then you ought to make sure you have a seat for every single person, every day, or don’t roll out such a policy. Also maybe don’t have your Real Estate team working directly in opposition to your harebrained scheme for like the last decade.

And then this “for those locations with a deficit they will designate the appropriate number of people as virtual”…

really? Well who decides that? Who decides who gets to be virtual and who gets to continue to struggle with trying to even reserve a seat on a daily basis? I’m sure that will be a fair and equitable process that everyone will be happy with.

who are currently stragglers in those same offices by 1/1/24. And they don't FIT.

  • I don't think this is true. Where did you get that info? For locations with space constraints the work will continue into 2024 to get them ready for RTO. That is why there is a reference to 2024 in the communication.

We've all been told the reports will say who's put in 24 hours a week and who hasn't. The report won't know there wasn't a reservation.

  • once again a post with no details about (we have been told) group, locale and an assumption what they have been told applies to all 157k employees. You have to use common sense here. If you cannot get a reservation you get your manager involved. As hard as it is to believe this is not going to be a situation where for example you have 200 workstations available and they expect 400 people to show up. Simply not going to happen.

Which is, all in the office by 9/5 of this year, 3+ days a week.

  • this is also not 100% true. It was clearly stated there will still be virtual workers. Yes, about 10% when it is all said and done, but it is reasonable to expect there could be more os office space constraints are resolved.

"You people are crazy. You are not going into the office to wander around to find a seat, or sit on the floor. You will use the reservation system. No seat, no need to go to the office. For those locations with a deficit they will designate the appropriate number of people as virtual. Also, in the memo it stated they want to move quickly but some of this will take til 2024. That is to give them time to get the appropriate workspaces built out. Heck, they may get to 2024 and decide it is easier to get rid of folks instead of building out the necessary space. That is the. Fifer they need to see how things shake out."

No, you are crazy. None of what you said bears any resemblance to what the company has now said repeatedly. Which is, all in the office by 9/5 of this year, 3+ days a week. 15% who are currently stragglers in those same offices by 1/1/24. And they don't FIT.

It doesn't add up and they need to be called out on it.

"No seat, no need to go to the office." We've all been told the reports will say who's put in 24 hours a week and who hasn't. The report won't know there wasn't a reservation.

And it's nice to say they really mean to get rid of a bunch of people, but at some point, Stankey gets over his baba throwing, diaper soiling tantrum and realizes that actual revenue producing services (which are already on thin ice due to years of staffing and funding starvation leading to underperforming contracts) will become unsupportable under this scheme given where the key people actually live.

So what we all really need to do here, and back home in the company is point out the true insanity of this situation. Hopefully a grownup will show up at some point and take the rattle away from JS and send him to bed without supper.

Some groups in Bedminster were already told their new designation is Dallas.

This is not the first post like this. All have one thing in common, not a single detail. For example, group, time to relocate, date by which to move, last day on payroll if you choose not to ove.

if you are in a big state like ny or ca and relocating to smaller dallas and atlanta areas . you will be taking a large paycut.

There will be little a of room. CRE has agreed to put custom name tags in place for managers who are up in arms about RTO and posting here. When you get back to the office, select any open spot with a “Karen” or “Darren” marker.

I agree. I’m a developer, I need quiet time to solve complex problems. Gather us all together, all we will do is chat and complain.

"Go in with a mindset for success rather than already poisoning the well."

This is hilarious. Some of us have already the effects of this poison well, more than once.

Developers don't collaborate. They solve problems in their heads. And when they spend all their time complaining that it's too hot, too cold, too noisy to think, they don't do that.

The collaboration will be a bunch of people standing around saying how insane this is.

I'm not debating it, it's happened and will happen again because there is NO other thing that can happen.

There will be more space opening up at these locations every 60 days. That is the cycle of layoffs for the next 2 years.

for the last several years CRE has been selling real estate and reducing rental space. All made since with WFH. Now the Stink sends an email that few knew any details on to send everyone back to the office when there isn't enough space. All part of his plan to reduce headcount by forced relocations employees won't accept, creating miserable working conditions where employee productivity is expected to improve and no breaks given for the inconveniences of poor work environment. The decision has been made on RTO by the Stink, the employees need to decide if the compensation they are getting is worth staying for with such a bleak future. Stinky thinking everyone should eventually be in Dallas just shows his stupidity.

You will logon to a different work station everyday so bring bleach wipes to ki-l the last shift’s bacteria filth and skin dander from the worn out keyboard and old PC. Clean the desk, chair and also the candy and french fries on the floor the roaches thrive on and begin collaborating.

believe me they wont want you to move and most likely those in other areas besides GA and TX are mostly likely done. Those that see the budgets and "new" tech developments -which there havent been for years...know this

Cigarettes, Alcohol, and Favors may be the new form of currency at The Hubs. I heard they are reprising the soda machines to $3 per can and there won't be outside food and beverage allowed.

Anyone posting here about the buildings, condition, space, chairs, parking, etc, you are missing the point. This RTO is about getting rid of thousands of people. Period. They will figure out the rest later. Perhaps Bedminster will assign days so people take turns, that is all a distraction. The real story here is mass force reductions.

There are multiple sites and buildings in Atlanta. You will be able to find a working space. Might take some creativity collaboration to find the best option. This is sort of the point with RTO. Go in with a mindset for success rather than already poisoning the well.

After all is said and done do you really think the company gives a hoot about desk space.??? The “they don’t care” applies to everyone and everything. It’s every man for himself at this point. That’s how they want it. Misery loves company.

THEY DO NOT CARE.

That is first and foremost.

To someone else’s point below…even before the pandemic, and certainly since, CRE just seems to be closing office space and where they aren’t closing, they are shrinking and consolidating it. It’s almost like no one
has made them aware or engaged or “collaborated” with them on this plan to bring so many more people back in full time.

It is going to be crowded, dirty, and some will literally be sitting on the floor or in cafeterias. Think like a crowded day at Disney World. Maybe Stankey will have the AC Settings raised up to 80 to really ppl UT the screws to the people.

There will not be.

I've seen the numbers for the NJ sites. One of them is a 4:1 deficit and the other will be over a 2:1 deficit when GRE is done vacating buildings there - which they STILL are moving ahead with, completely ignoring RTO plans.

This whole thing - there's NO plan. It would be an insult to Moe Larry and Curly to imply stooges were running this.
