Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

RTO is nonsense - but you folks make it sound like all out of hub folks are being canned

First let me say I do not agree with the RTO, the way it is being handled, or the job losses as a result of roles being consolidated.

The 1200 or so people on this board are unnecessarily stressing yourselves out. Be realistic, T is not moving every job ( or role is the term they use) in a non hub city to a hub city. That simply is not true. Just like the BIG surplus that was supposed to happen in 1Q2023, this board went nuts. It simply never happened. The employee count supports it did not happen. Sure, some roles being consolidated to one or more hubs will result in job losses, but the comments on the board seem a bit extreme.

The goal of this Stinky Chaos is to make people leave. Executives down to the manager level are all scrambling to figure out what Stinky wants done and making up rules they hope fits. Don't be surprised when each direct report gives their plan to Stinky that he rejects it, and the chaos extends. There is no long-term future for you unless you are in Dallas.

Also there has been offers to some management employees already who are not near hubs or spoke hubs. Maybe a lot is not being shared as yes there is a lot of confusion but there is also likely some self preservation happening as well.

Tell us about these offers!!! What are the details?

OP you are either trying to stir the pot or you are out of touch with reality. Stanley said he expects 15,000 less people “when this is all said and done”. And if that number factors in the new hires still going on, and ramping up teams offshore, the actual number of people who are expected to leave could be even higher than 15k.

See the numbers below.

You are wrong! We’ve been told move or leave. It is a move to reduce headcount period! Stanley even said in interview he expects 15,000 reduction in headcount. Wake up!

Another post with no support. Who told you to move? What group, to / from cities, and type of work do you do? What are the details of the move? How long to relocate, what if you choose not to, what are the details of your severance offer?

Your numbers are incorrect. There were over 7k positions eliminated before end of 1Q 2023. When over 15k positions have been cut, in the last 12 months and a published quote from Stankey that AT&T will have about 15k fewer employees in 2023 vs 2022, the numbers are real.

Once again a statement with no support. Where did you get the 7k number from?

1Q2022 - 203,x-x as per financial statement. That number seems to have been adjusted in the 1Q2023 report to 172,x-x.
2Q2022 - 172,x-x WM and Xandr spin off during this qtr
3Q2022 - 169,x-x
4Q2022 - 162,x-x.
Within the first week of 2023 the number was 157,x-x
1Q2023 - 157,x-x

Anyway you look at it we have lost a bunch already. Yes new hires are in these numbers. We can only speculate how many are new hires. Without any insight to that number my guess it is not significant.

Oh and if everyone decides to move to save their job, the difference will be made up with firing people that don’t come in 3-5 days, and more layoffs.

True. Customer facing people are not being forced to a hub. My manager has said as much. Ironically, my manager may end up being asked to move to a hub, but I will not. If, however, I am wrong, and I do get asked to move to a hub, it would be very d-mb. All of my customers are where I live and work today, and an asinine decision like that would probably be enough to make me jump ship for greener pastures.

Either way, I don't worry!

The reality that employees need to grasp is that AT&T is not the only company in the world, there are more good jobs at good companies available right now than in the last 10 years. If you cannot see the downward trend of AT&T, you don't want to see it. Don't be afraid to change jobs. If you're not eligible for a full retirment (that's worth it) then move on now.

If you are in a Hub you need to report to the office, this includes those with TW designation. Mandatory of 3 days a week. In speaking with those i have come close too from previous teams and are now on other teams, after we had a chat it is discerning to hear that their Director have not fully disclose the little they know already as they have the same information as they roll up to the same SVP. If you are in Atlanta and Dallas and want to keep your job report by the noted dates. In Atlanta is already a difficult office configurations before this RTO so we have to deal with it if we need our jobs. Hopefully once the dust settles they will revisit this new mandate. Also there has been offers to some management employees already who are not near hubs or spoke hubs. Maybe a lot is not being shared as yes there is a lot of confusion but there is also likely some self preservation happening as well.

OP … what rock have you been living under? There were 8K folks that left the business at the end of 2022. That was followed up with a 1Q2023 HC reduction of 5k. RTO those 15% (9K) will have to make a relocation decision soon. 2Q2023 layoff scheduled for 6/22, of payroll 7/7 is targeting another 5-6k. GM reductions planned in next 30 days is estimated around 13% of GM’s (L3-L4) will be let got. Not a good picture right now, wheels on the bus have fallen off.

To be fair, so far we're being told that we will be told soon to move or leave. As far as I know no one actually got a letter telling them it's time to decide yet. On one hand, it feels like it's definitely going to happen soon, but in the other, some of us have seen it in the past, and then nothing happened. Speaking from experience.

Exactly right. But to read some of these posts people are suggesting they have already been asked to move which is highly unlikely. I wish people would just state the facts and not over speculate on what is about to happen.

Lost over 30% in my immediate workgroup. Sure seems like it happened.

Your immediate workgroup is not representative of what happened. Exactly the issue with this board. Nobody has much visibility (or facts) beyond their own immediate group but they speak as if what they see and hear is what happens across the entire company. Look at the numbers - according to the 1Q2023 financial statement there were 157,x-x employees at the end of 2023. On 3/6/2023 there were 153,x-x employees. Earlier this month there were 157,x-x employees.

We have been told to move or leave - please be more specific ! To date I think 2 people have posted they have been asked to move. Tell us where you work, you position, locale and where you have been asked to move and the timeline for the move, and what you were told about the severance.

As I recall John did not say 15k this year, the reduction is part of the whatever $B cost reduction plan over the course of (I think it was 3 years) Look at the numbers…
We ended 1Q2022 with 228,x-x employees. After the DTV, WM and Xandr spin-off we were at 172,x-x employees at the end of 2Q2022. Today we are at 153k

Seriously people, you all need to ANGRY at Stankey and Randall…..and the BOARD! All I can say is holy sh*t that our executives feel good about their behavior.

NONE OF THE EMPLOYEES matter—- if that isn’t abundantly clear, you all are in fantasy land. I am OUTRAGED at Stankey and the board of directors for driving this company into the ground! The Directors and below have made this company work and NOW STANKEY is going to sink it into oblivion. He’s going to have his MULTI MILLION Dollar pararchute….what are you going to have for your loyalty!? ZERO

I left the company 2 years ago and I feel for my brother and sisters—— F*CK AT&T senior leadership and May Stankey burn in HE-L!

To: "I'm not stressed. I'm union." Congrats on that, seriously. But what that really means is that your union groups are now in a slow negotiated headcount bleed at a floundering company sliding backwards in the competitive landscape, saddled with immense debt and rudderless leadership, a stock that's down on its knees getting whipped by investors daily, which wants a great many of you gone, versus a quick sword cut like going on now with management. Similar eventual outcomes, but yes, far different timing and method steps to get there. Investors want many of you gone, and management wants many of you gone. In that regard, you're identical to management.

100% agree: "You are wrong! We’ve been told move or leave. It is a move to reduce headcount period! Stanley even said in interview he expects 15,000 reduction in headcount. Wake up!"

I have g-ns and ammo, but not enough of either to protect myself and my family adequately in my view in the violent metro areas with defunded police depts and insufficient jails and failed court systems, which this company is trying to ram tens of thousands of employees into via "relo mandate", when they really don't want any of them to really go there, because they instead want to fire them in coming weeks and months for not reporting there.

Some woke readers of this post sadly do not realize that there are a great many rural places and small isolated towns in this country where sirens don't wail all night, a homeless addict doesn't shank you as you're on the sidewalk, you're not mugged in the local park, and neighbors actually look out for you and your kids and your property, day and night. Such wokers may call such places horrible hickvilles in the sticks, but many, many millions of us call it a safe haven where we intend to stay. Take your gang bangers and crack dealers and violent criminals and coddle them all you like in your big cities, and set them free immediately after each crime, assuming you arrest them at all. In the heartland, those folks don't last long at all here. They move on, or they're moved on. Our police depts are funded, trained, and shoot when needed to protect their lives and the lives of the innocent, without fear of being on the news and armchair quarterbacked of their actions in the heat of danger with nanoseconds to decide on a course of action. So do many of our citizens. I've got a small armory myself, and every neighbor I know does as well. A violent crime committing crip or blood in these areas would have a free life expectancy far less than a fruit fly. Please note also I didn't note a single race or ethnicity. Bad is bad, and bad is color blind. So is good color blind also. Should you so wish, I could introduce you to some white trash, black trash, or any other color trash you name. I could also tell you about great human examples right now of every single skin color under the sun. Wokers, truly wake up. It's past time.
