Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Work Hard Enough To Not Get Fired

That is all this nonsense RTO business will create. People will just sandbag it and work just hard enough to stay off the radar and not get fired. It's actually way easier than you think. You can hide for years in certain departments here doing the bare minimum (if not less). Depending on how this plays out, I will go from being a hard working and dedicated employee who goes above and beyond to expand my skillset and meet project deadlines to a compliance slug who plays the game all day (8-5 that is) and doesn't give them an ounce more than needed to stay employed. Congratulations Stank, your already levered up company (that you helped create BTW) will continue to be average, innovation will be stifled and talent will continue to erode, but hey, who cares right?? It is AT&T after all. This is not new news to any of us.

I think it was Lily Tomlin - the transcript from that SNL Classic:

Ernestine: A gracious hello. Here at the Phone Company, we handle eighty-four billion calls a year. Serving everyone from presidents and kings to the sc-m of the earth. So, we realize that, every so often, you can’t get an operator, or for no apparent reason your phone goes out of order, or perhaps you get charged for a call you didn’t make. We don’t care!

Watch this… [ she hits buttons maniacally ] We just lost Peoria.

You see, this phone system consists of a multibillion-dollar matrix of space age technology that is so sophisticated — [ she hits buttons with her elbows ] even we can’t handle it. But that’s your problem, isn’t it? So, the next time you complain about your phone service, why don’t you try using two Dixie cups with a string? We don’t care. We don’t have to. We’re the Phone Company.

I believe the comment: "We don't care. We don't have to, we are the phone company" was an old reference to one of Carol Burnett's phone company skit where she mocks Ma Bell. She had several phone operator skits and often ended with a line like this. I believe this was intended to show a management that did not care about customers. Another ending line was "If you don't like us, get 2 cans and a string"

The new policy clearly states your performance will be measured on your commitments and achievements, and basically said if you’re [caught] only doing the bare minimum, you will be required to come into the office every day! Check it at HR Onestop: How and Where we work

Based on this post, it’s highly doubtful you have ever been a hard working and dedicated employee.
