Unfortunately, this is not the only company where employees' fate depends on whether the boss likes them or not. However, I have never experienced this being more important than employees' actual work, which I think is the case here. That's just my opinion though, I could be wrong?

Make your boss look good. Their job is to surround themselves with smart , dependable workers. If you do that you’ll be just fine.
A supervisor is answerable for his/her direct reports. Either a direct report is making their supervisor look good, or making him/her look bad. And that will be reflected in appraisals, which for some positions is the first thing looked at when deciding who to lay off.
There are not too many supervisors with the luxury of ignoring performance (or attendance).
Sounds like you are making excuses because you aren't getting ahead. Hint, maybe it's you.
It's the only way to advance in this company.
Do whatever you can to make sure your boss likes you.
If you are stuck with a boss that doesn't like you, transfer to another department, otherwise you have no future.
