Thread regarding Lumen Technologies layoffs

It really is too late

Lumen is trying to place fiber and catch up to our competitors at a snails pace. One fact is that the money to buy and place this fiber is coming from Copper/Legacy customers. Customers do not pre-pay when ordering fiber but rather we place first then bill them in the end. So, if copper customers are leaving because Lumen neglects to enhance or improve Copper/Legacy, then how can we afford to move forward? Yes, legacy is old and outdated but if you watch and read the last quarter's financial report; copper/legacy revenue was generating almost the same amount of money as Enterprise. Stupid Math would say, Then you would need to double the fiber and Enterprise customers to eliminate Copper/Legacy. CenturyLink and Frontier missed the CAF 2 fiber placement in 2020 and 2021. (See Google). Now fiber is being halted until Lumen realigns but eventually that Copper/Legacy bathtub is going to drain and Lumen will have NO money to massively place Fiber. It's too late for Lumen to become this Global (ha!) Or national phenomenon. Expect more states to be sold.

There is a fiber optics shortage, so when Lumen decides to get going again with Quantum Fiber brand they still may need to wait another year. They need to plan ahead.

Just my opinion, but kind of obvious, the plan is, or at least was, to separate the fiber to the Quantum Fiber brand, to setup a selloff of the legacy and copper staying with the Centurylink brand. This was before the recent stock plummet after the 4Q earnings call, where it was revealed that there was a "pause" in the fiber build at the end of 2022, which they expect to restart end of 2023. I am sure there are still some jobs being worked, but not what they expected. The numbers with the decreased results and lowered forecasts are here. https://www.lightreading.com/broadband/lumen-snips-fiber-buildout-target-amid-company-reset/d/d-id/783126

“Quantum fiber technology will replace everything within 13 years. It isn't the spin-off of Lumen that they call Quantum Fiber.”

Someone is confusing Quantum technology which is an emerging field of physics and engineering, encompassing technologies that rely on the properties of quantum mechanics, especially quantum entanglement, quantum superposition, and quantum tunneling with Quantum Fiber a Lumen product.

My understanding of the work getting approved is related to road move or light rail project. No choice but to do it. New builds are few. Lots of work has been engineered but on hold for funding. Who knows? My area is rural and so ridiculously slow. Even our I&M techs have days that nobody has a single ticket. That is getting to be the norm not the exception. Everyone is struggling with it. Very discouraging and depressing to so extent. Senior techs like it junior techs worried

Weird. All i ever see is contract signed budget accepted and approved.

Dont disagree that all the fiber being placed and most of it being spliced is by contractors. Some of it is coming back in house though. The poster was saying no fiber is being placed anywhere which is completely untrue.

The only fiber going on, is all being installed by contractors. ALL OF IT.

With the better weather I see a lot of fiber work, but just contractors.

Placing fiber like its grass seed in my area. In fact its behind because sub divisions and mdus arent being built fast enough. As for Quantum fiber take the foot out of your mouth. Psst..its a billiing thing not a new product.

Im not sure what area you're in.
In Washington State, they are offering Fiber tech titles to any IR or Cable technicians.
Plenty of fiber plants went in. Any towns larger than 15,000 are already FTTP ready and in service.

There is no new fiber going in unless it's contractors. Some are installing whips or moving fiber from legacy systems to level 3 or no union side.

There is literally a class action lawsuit against the company for exaggerating the amount of fiber we planned to place. Or haven't placed.

They are busting our ba--s trying to get that fiber in the ground and serve as many living units as they can.

In other words, it takes money to make money.
Is Quantum Fiber the supposed "Savior of Lumen"?
