T over uses the word automation. Business cases show automation so Execs see it on paper but anyone looking closely know systems haven’t really eliminated the need for real humans to do the work.
It should be interesting to see if T just goes with what’s written in a business case or wait and see what really is still not able to be automated.

Glad to hear that you have several techs in your group over 60 because if they also have 30+ years of service, it costs ATT more money every month to fund their pensions, they're at the top. T might think differently about keeping these senior citizens around! I know there are a lot of techs in their 60s throughout T, very close to retirement and would more than likely accept any kind of offer from T to leave earlier than planned.

I would advise anyone that knows their job is at risk to update resumes, start networking, study and take the qualifications test for other positions now. Better to be proactive vs. reactive for stress reduction and improve your chances at other opportunities.

The company is fast tracking the transformation to automation and retiring legacy systems. Managers, support groups and techs that support these systems are at risk. CFO Pascal and McElfresh have stated most of this in their recent interviews along with others town halls meetings.

Overlay positions were more than one seller is being compensated for a sale. Was on an all hands leadership Q&A call last week and this was mentioned as a reason for some of the recent layoffs. The irony was that this call was with a particular business unit an an overlay organization. Have heard rumors that there will be additional restructuring of the overlay organization later this year

I have several mid 60’s techs in my group and they aren’t going anywhere unless the company offers an incentive. They are healthy and want to continue to work in light of the revelations about the economy, out of control inflation, high interest rates and Social Security funding issue with lack of funding in about 9-10 years.

I will retire before I do residential installations! People are slobs and their homes are disgusting in lots of cases! That's where I draw the line when it comes to installations!

All field technicians will be required to carry an extension ladder and drill for Gpon residential and business installs and Bvoip installs over copper. The free ride is over, no more excuses for DEG or 911 techs and also systems techs. Why should everyone else do the difficult work while you complain about any work your assigned. Any union president that thinks he doesn’t have to do residential installs because they are on the DEG crew will be told to work or go home like everyone else. Quit crying you winers.

T has a lot of technicians in their mid to late 60s and T knows this, therefore, T is willing to wait it out for these employees to leave on their own terms. This means that T will most certainly not be offering any 5+5+5 to any craft in the company. When these senior citizens start retiring over the next 2-3 years, it will reduce the headcount through natural attrition, hence, no severance pay! In the meantime, they will be utilized however they can, business as usual! T is not giving an exit gift to any employee, period! So, it’s time to get over your hopes and dreams of 5+5+5!

Approximately how many people are targeted?

I don't believe your job has been automated, it has been outsourced to contractors. You should engage your Union. At the very least their are techs with 25-30 years that would love to job match, leave the company and let you have their job. AT&T is engaging is some Phuckery as usual.

Not the 5+5+5 rumor again...heard it so many times on this website, not sure if it's the same person, but God bless you for keeping your hopes alive! You're certainly allowed to dream!

I’ve heard rumors for management in Cable Repair/I&R/IEFS/TFS, or whatever they go by now. But it’s likely nothing more than a rumor.

Per the Union and multiple well placed T sources, the Company has a plan to offer an enhanced buyout offer of five years to age, five years to service and a payment of five thousand dollars per year of service to union represented employees.

If you're a retirement eligible craft employee with 30+ years, does it make sense to wait until june 30 to retire just in case there's a rumored buyout?

Mobility is at constant surplus too and our VP assured us that there will be surpluses coming in summer, or maybe around May. They aren't happy with the amount of people who voluntarily quit, they aren't happy with the amount of people they cut, they could not cut them all out once because they need to re-group first (shuffle people to test the waters), once that is settled, they will cut more people off. Rinse, repeat. Some AVP above mentioned automation is the thing that they will support.

You never, ever have to ask when the next layoff is. If you have been here more that 2 weeks, you already know. T is in a constant cycle of surplus. The major events occur every 90 days, the smaller boutique size layoffs occur at any other other time. This has never or will ever change.

What does U-TRC stand for? Is that a uverse group?

Again, those individuals/groups not supporting Fiber Build or Mobility are at risk each quarter. Leadership has been very transparent that cuts to those business units are coming.

The entire U-TRC group is being surplussed. Last date on the payroll is 3-31. They said that their job is being "automated" but I know for a fact it has been outsourced to the Czech Republic. Had someone from there call me today, doesn't know what they are doing. Fun times ahead if you need to contact the U-TRC.
