@2btz Yeah it's the collective cost savings for sure

@2hro it isn't that big. What WF pays for a hardware laptop or the MS Virtual Machine is roughly the same over a 3-year period. Consider that the laptop warranty also covers hardware replacement.

The real net gain is decreasing the support staff, which I'd put at saving maybe half to one Charlie Scharf annual compensation per year.

Outsourcing = More profit, happy shareholders, Poor quality , unhappy customer, unhappy stateside employees who are constantly fixing EGS's stupidity

A huge cost savings in near future will be realized when WF stops providing company laptops. A subset of users already have access to virtual desktops from personal devices.

Employees will take on the cost and support of their own computer hardware, merging personal/work on the same device (unless you buy a dedicated computer for work).

This will be significant in so many ways.

The last new laptop upgrade I received (4 years ago now) was still an insanely 2 year outdated Intel chip architecture. When I boot up in the morning I get worried I have to clear a landing strip for it to take off.

Wells Fargo is ditching gear to save money. Corporate cell phone? Gone. Corporate laptop? Better get yours refreshed soon. It may be the last one you get. You'll have to use your own equipment when you are working at home. In the office, you can use one of those stripped down VDI terminals.

I left for another financial services company and while there are some things about WF that made more sense, one thing that was insanely obvious from a week before I started was how much better end user tech is. Way better laptop, monitors, corporate supplied cell, home printer, home shredder, office headset and even a laptop bag.

At first I thought, all this shiny tech, they must want me working night and day. No! My boss asks weekly if I have TOO MUCH on my plate and tells me to make sure I’m not working too many hours. It’s been a big adjustment being treated like an adult and having equipment and systems that work and having a boss who is focused on your development and well-being. I hope many of you get to feel this way soon!

End user tech used to be decent, then management moved tech under the CFO. Now you have "enterprise class" systems bring built to the cheapest possible specs.

Never fear, cloud is scalable and elastic, yet it isn't, since scaling and elasticity cost money.

We are, by my estimates, about 8 - 10 YEARS behind the top 4 banks.

Charlotte was never known for being a tech hub. Add in the 3rd sting low iq Indian left overs from tech and you get a mess. You need quality headcount in tech.

From a WFHM perspective anything that was recently developed over the past few years (CORE, AIMS/ART request systems) have become too bloated. My guesses is they are deemed "too essential" to be taken down, retooled to run more efficiently.

Teams have made design and product decisions based on what other product teams have said they are going to implement. Then it turns out some of these product teams are unwilling to fulfill what they said they were doing that others made decisions based upon.

Wells Fargo had some seriously outdated tech when it merged with Wachovia. There are legacy Wells products being decommissioned now that should have been out of the network 10 years ago. There just wasn't the budget to make it happen.

There is also needless drama created by upper management levels that were neither legacy Wells nor legacy Wachovia, but more recent hires. One example involves an exec who wanted to end a relationship with a major tech vendor because he was bu-t hurt over lack of wining and dining. So an effort was put in place to start doing so, but that tech vendor made another purchase of a very prominent tech vendor we use heavily. So that exec was forced to tuck his tail between his legs. The result was a complete waste of time.

There are too many execs who are making major decisions who lack the competence to do so, and it hurts Tech and the rest of the coproration.

Rhetorical questions to think about. Where is your shared drive located? Can you get a virtual desktop in that datacenter or any datacenter so hops reduced?

That may still not fix all your problems and it will most likely introduce new problems! Fun hey?

At the root of the problem is leadership and strategy. There is this extreme silo'ng of roles and poor communication between technology teams where introducing a change isn't paired w/ incentivizing and trusting a professional tech mindset (let's come together and talk about the design, functions, configuration, deployment, support, etc).

This traditional project management approach would work best for WF.

Instead Agile is adopted poorly around tools like ServiceNow/JIRA which have amplified a mindset of "quick and fast, do your myopic task".

It really is a bummer, there are talented technology professionals at the bank who simply are not trusted or have visible path to lead and advance systems forward for the benefit of the bank!

I’ll bite, care to expand on the details? No matter what, you need to understand that we’ve been in a place where custom built software and a being phased out for off the shelf solutions and those are being severely restricted in terms of standard customisations. And specifically nothing is being rolled out to make your life easier or efficient. The selected software is a solution to a business level problem, zero sheets given to efficiency. Workday, Service Now, etc, removes roadblocks to upgrades due to being off the shelf, already offloaded to the cloud and increases controls to data but it was not at all intended (and does not) make our day to day easier compared to the old solutions.

Very bad leadership in technology . It is continue to ruin this company, it started after wellsfargo merger with wachovia. Current technology management is even worst. It never served the customers ( internal and external) . You can all try convince me but that is truth. Wellsfargo outsourcing strategy having wellsfargo India as separate entity ( copied other big firms in US) was bad idea and decided to run that as autonomous entity assuming that they can deliver quality products sitting from another continent. Indian outsourcing was never a success in delivering products , but they survive on maintenance work and well documented hand off work (time and materials contract).

The thing is, Wachovia's 'superior' technology is why Charlotte was allowed to become a major Wells Fargo hub. The WF leadership, at the time, failed to recognize the Wachovia technology was in as bad a shape of the financials were. Wells should have layed off the whole east coast. That was the start of the current sh!t$how we have today.

The systems are outdated. Especially the backoffice systems. But these systems are not easy to upgrade, combine that with they are systems maintained by external vendors (relationships from (EX-AG Edwards, Norwest and Wachovia)) makes it very complicated and EXPENSIVE!

It’s 20 hops to get to my shared drive - I’m assuming the whole network is architected this way. I’ve never experienced such horrible performance - it’s slightly better than a dial up connection
