Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Meets is the new Exceeds

Here’s how a job works - you perform an agreed set of tasks for a company and a company pays you an agreed amount of money. That’s not a bad thing. That is how pricing works. The company can dangle awards in front of you but none of that is guaranteed. Why would you give the company more than what they asked for? The company is not your friend.

Meets does not = Exceeds. Meets is Meets. I have no doubt that there are inept managers out there and people breaking their backs to end up with a Meets. And if you did and that's all you got I wholeheartedly support you slacking and doing enough to make Meets. But there are those of us who are working hard but getting, at-least to me, appropriate remuneration. I work 8 hrs a day, that's it. If ever an off-hours item is needed then it's OT or I comp the time how I want.

My group leader made the blanket decision that no one on the team would get “exceeds” regardless of actual effort and outcomes. I got 3.83% increase.

In tech I have found little incentive over the years to try and do more than bare minimum. Minimal pay/bonus increases year to year and absolutely zero (ZERO!) opportunities to grow your career.

WF is a filler job, one to pass the time. If you stay more than two years, well, that's on you. I take full responsibility for not moving on sooner.

Simply put, as you start your workday at WF, all of your effort should go into the strategy of limiting your workload without advertising your strategy. Control as much as you can in your calendar and set boundaries. Avoid quick rapid firing of email replies, hyper prioritize/compartmentalize work (this is a talent all in its own and a really good tool for life in general), let things fail if need be.

Remember to be nice and not take anything personal. Be above it and leave the company with some dignity.

Ratings are stupid. It might work in factories where you do all the same work and can compare to other workers. However, there is no way to evaluate people who are doing totally different work. Time for companies to end this practice.

agreed about the bell curve...... tho mgr "dangled" work as an opportunity...that insinuates a promotion. this work never materialized... my point being, mgrs can promote--if they have b@lls. Not all mgrs at WF should be mgrs. for some it's a form of power-- some really do take care of their team

In the old world, I consistently earned 4s and 5s. Now I don’t think there is anything I could possibly do to earn an exceeds. My boss had no negative feedback on my review, told me I had a really amazing year and I should be proud…to meet requirements. F that. No extra stretch assignment for me unless I stretch my way out the door.

Agreed.

Take all other mistakes/problems/d-mb moves away, and this one decision on Charlie’s part shows what a clueless and terrible leader he is. Disappoint me once, and I’ll work harder that year to try to prove myself to you. Disappoint me again, and I figure out the system and I stop trying.

You have a left and right nutsack?

I’ve learned exactly that the past two reviews. I got an exceeds the past two years, but bonuses were 2k more than my previous year when I got a meets. Not worth the long hours and effort, so my efforts will be at a ‘’meets’ level from now on.

Even if you are a high performer on high visibility projects, your manager is forced to bell curve rate their employees with meets being the highest.
