After 14 years I left last fall (in tech). Up until then I swear they were daring us to leave. They made everything miserable, harder to do my job, less efficient, RTO when I had been working from home for 5 years prior to COVID. I was done with 14 years of 2% raises (always a meets). For my trouble of leaving I got a 20K raise, full time WFH and less stress at my new job.

If you have a good relationship with your manager tell them. First round is for span of control so it’ll be mostly made up of middle management. I have begged but I’m “too valuable” (but didn’t get that promo I was promised for a year) and we are short staffed so she said it won’t happen. But other circumstances could be different.

I’ve volunteered to be laid off twice. For me it was easy both times. I simply had a conversation with my boss’s boss and told them I was willing to go. Granted I had good relationships with both individuals and it worked. In the first case, I was asked to come back after 11 months. In the second case, I happily retired. It can be done. Good luck!

Yes, you can volunteer for a layoff. You can even forgo your severance package. Heck, you don’t even have to ask for it. Just leave.

Honestly, better in the long run if you just look for a better job and quit WF.

"The first job titles to go should be Scrum Master and Kanban Lead."

AMEN!!! What grift roles. Total busy work. Requiring the entering of redundant information on boards that no one cares about is blatantly nonproductive. Dumping them would immediately save $$$ and increase productivity.

We had a manager volunteer to be displaced and it was granted. Found out later he had a serious illness and wanted to spend more time with his kids and focus on getting healthy. From my understanding, it was a private conversation with his manager and this individual worked him into the displacement. I’m confident HR was not involved in the discussion since it involved a health matter. They get nervous about that since it could be misconstrued as discrimination. Looking back on it, it was kind they honored his wishes. He seems happy and his health is rebounding.

The Urban Legend is ... if you ASK for it, you'll likely NOT get it……

You will not only NOT get it, you will be bullied and harassed in a concerted effort to run you off. Once you ask for a layoff you are a wounded antelope surrounded by jackals.

For rank & File
Retirement = decent severance.

Sadly, that’s about all you can hope for.

Management & C-Suite, maybe paid healthcare and a decent pension.

@1jja+1labFarE,

Yeah we pretty much don't get anything for retirement. It's a joke. I'm still not sure why they call it retiring at Wells or whatever they call it. All you're doing is essentially quitting. I looked into healthcare benefits after "retirement" and it was around $1000/month for a single person. (Maybe more - I looked a few years ago.)

If they offered people some length of salary continuation and maybe some lower-costing healthcare benefits as a package, people might jump at the chance to leave.

"package for early retirement", what do you get for retirement at all? You don't get anything anymore.

The Urban Legend is ... if you ASK for it, you'll likely NOT get it, since they figure you're probably frustrated enough that you'll be quitting soon anyway ... so they can save the money on Severance.

It's not possible, unfortunately. I haven't checked this year but last year the handbook had a statement indicating one could not volunteer for displacement (or some similar verbiage). It's a shame because it could be a win-win. All of us are replaceable so why not sift, lift and shift with those who are at least a Fully Meets & who want or need to be here and cut others loose who don't.

Unfortunately it's not possible. I know someone who was looking to retire within 4 months of when layoffs hit. They volunteered to be laid off in lieu of another teammate. Nope. It was denied.

I wish they'd offer some kind of package for early retirement. I'd be first in line for that.

Let's start with everyone under the title "business execution consultant" title. I'd like to have them all line up and have to go through and explain exactly what it is they do on a town hall for all to hear.
